Most of the games I’ve played and been a Keeper for have been IRL games. The investigators have always surprised me on how they resolve the situations that come up and how deep the red herring rabbit hole can go. The biggest weakness of the system, is that many clues are written into the roll of a dice and that gets tricky if I as the keeper want you to find that thing to keep the story interesting and feeling alive. I therefore will give the “moving the game along clue” and the others they depend on those dice rolls. I find it the right balance. Make no mistake here this is a Horror game and character are squishy like real humans. It can fun running the one-shots that ramp up the stakes quickly, but I prefer -be that as player or keeper- the longer games are where the deeper role-play really comes out and you get attached to the characters and really don’t like that moment when the Mythos gets them. I'm looking forward to seeing you in a game for Call of Cthulhu.
Review is for the 2024 rules and having been DMing games since its release and DM’d 2014 for many years in IRL groups. I’ve found the new rulebooks to be clearer and more informative than the previous version. All of the players have been having a blast with with new class features and working out great ways to power build their character. There are so many great adventure from Wizards of the Coast and some of the newer ones are bring back a few older adventures, I remember form AD&D days. Having given them a modern feel and to fit the newer rules. Overall I feel it is a great TTRPG, that gives the players a lot of options. It is more a combat game that role-play, but that’s no reason for RP to be ignored either. He two go hand in hand in D&D and make those really memorable games.
