I participated in an OSE (Old School Essentials) one-shot that Vanny ran, which served as a good example of what the TTRPG can offer - both mechanically and narratively. The DM navigated some unavoidable hurdles (two players dropping out mid-game unrelated to the session itself, along with some initial tech issues) and kept the game session going seamlessly and with confidence. It was very apparent that Vanny really enjoys running these games, which in itself is always a good sign and further helped to encourage my active participation in the game itself. He also did a good job at ensuring each player had their time to shine. Vanny also solicited feedback via "Stars and Wishes" which demonstrated his desire for his players to have a great time while also remaining open to feedback and improving the game experience for himself and future players.
Lykos as a GM is player-focused which encourages player cohesion at his gaming table. The game I participated in was a focused one-shot but still allowed for a wide range of player agency and deviation, as players are wont to do. Lykos clearly communicated the game system and was willing to lean into narrative moments during important scenes as opposed to being bogged down by mechanics-only rulings.
My first game on StartPlaying was hosted by Sir Beef, where he ran a one-shot game of Forbidden Lands. I had been wanting to play this game for years, and I was so glad that I made the time to do so. The game was well-paced, each player was given the opportunity to participate and Sir Beef was great about bringing each player back into the spotlight if they had not gotten a chance to contribute yet in a particular scene. The story was engaging and the virtual tabletop visual aids and background music were very helpful in setting the mood. The group of players in this game was also great; it was as if I was gaming with some of my best friends around the table. All of the other players in this session were repeat participants in Sir Beef's games, and it is no surprise as to why that is. I'm already looking forward to the next time I can participate in one of his games!
