About WynnSome

Hi, my name is Wynn. I am a dad, volunteer, and attorney who lives on the east coast. I'm originally from Western NY (Go Bills!) and have lived in a variety of places around the country. In my day job I get really stressed out, so this is what I do for fun! I had parents who would never have let me near DND as a kid, but who also encouraged me to embrace the worlds of Tolkien, Lewis, L'Engle, and so many more. I grew up with friends who would make wooden swords with me and reenact Redwall scenes out in the grove of trees behind their house. My imagination ran wild. In primary and secondary school, and then in college as well, I became invested in theater of all kinds - Shakespeare, musicals, opera - you name it. I loved being on stage and behind the scenes as well. Given all of those things - it only makes sense that when I finally stumbled upon the world of TTRPGs as an adult I felt like I had found what I'd been missing for such a long time. I dove in head-first, inundating myself first in the work of Critical Role and then on from there. I GMed many times before ever having the chance to play myself, but have been fortunate to be a player several times now - including on a recent (and fantastic) Daggerheart campaign through SPG! I can't wait to connect with more amazing people.

My favorite shows/movies are

Avatar the Last Airbender, The West Wing, Parks & Rec, Chef's Table, Great British Baking Show, Heartstopper, Grimm - and that's just TV! Some of my favorite movies include LOTR (extended editions!), Master & Commander, Star Wars (minus the sequels), and I love cheesy sci-fi - Real Steel/Pacific Rim

People are always surprised when I tell them

That I worked for a period of time as a workforce trainer working with abuse survivors to help them gain the skills needed to work in professional bakeries. I make a MEAN cupcake y'all.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Running after my kid, wrangling cases between courtrooms, trying to afford therapy, cooking something delicious, or creating yet another character on DND Beyond.

How WynnSome runs games

It may sound cheesy but I love absolutely every aspect of TTRPGs. I can role play all day - voices, explore complex character development, navigate drama, political intrigue - you name it and I am ready to have fun and build a scene and world where the stage is waiting for you to shine. But I am also a lover of all things fantasy battle related (from the Battle for Geonosis to Helm's Deep) - I love to create and facilitate an epic combat sequence. In general I do my best to find a balance for most campaigns or one-shots, but depending on the interests of the party or table, I would be more than happy to cater more heavily to specific hopes or wants.

Rules are...

Important - don't get me wrong. In the real world we're governed by rules - gravity, traffic, statutory - and that's coming from a lawyer! But in TTRPG's the rules exist to provide structure/facilitate rhythm. That said - I'm no dictator, and I love a game to feel collaborative and freedom-filled!

When it comes to voices

I almost always try to make voices that fit my characters - to bring them to life. I absolutely support a player's choice to try a voice or not for their character - I would never want someone to be uncomfortable trying something, even if they end up deciding to drop it in the long-run.

WynnSome's ideal table

The table is meant to be a safe, open, welcoming space where players can stretch their wings and minds and collaborate to tell an incredible story. I love when players are comfortable enough to really step out of their own shadows and dive into play 110%. If a table is driving collaboration naturally I will do my best to step back and allow the organic dynamics to occur. If I need to encourage trust and help build some creative relationships among the table then I can facilitate that as well.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

My first major deep dive into DND was through Critical Role. I love the table dynamics, the friendship, the creativity and generosity of their style of play - all of it. Now I am absolutely not Matt Mercer, but I do hope that my table feels like it honors the best parts of the model they've created.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Tend to put themselves or the story they want to tell just for their character alone above the needs/wants of the table and fellow players. A key goal of collaborative gaming is being flexible with your own needs/desires to help make the game enjoyable for everyone. 1 for all, all for 1.

My perfect party mix is

A blend of experience and new folks, a blend of personalities, a mixture of classes to allow for truly diverse combat and role-playing opportunities. And as I have said previously - the perfect party is one where everyone is comfortable and having a great time together!
