About Willow

Hi, my name is Willow. I'm a 39 year old trans woman from Michigan. I played my first tabletop RPG game over a decade ago with my now wife, my sister, and my brother in law DMing. I had never played a game with that much player freedom and choice before, and loved the collaboration with the other players. I didn't get involved with a regular game until playing D and D 5E with some coworkers at a previous job a few years ago. My boss let us use the conference room at work, and we would play after my shift on Sundays. Unfortunately, due to some work drama, we had to stop using the conference room and had trouble finding another location. One of my coworkers eventually allowed the use of his house, only with me as the DM now. This unfortunately this didn't really work out. Now I run a game with them and their friends, a group of mostly neurodivergent kids ages 6 to 9. While at times, it can feel a bit like herding cats playing with a group this young, I love seeing just how creative they can be, and how good they are at problem solving. I also like to ask my players what they liked, and would like to see changed, so the game can be even better for them the next session. I can already tell that one if them is going to be a great DM in another 5 years. I am also involved in my local improv and stand up comedy communities, giving me the ability to roleplay on the fly and react quickly to unexpected decisions by my players.

I ran my first game...

I ran my first game in a coworkers basement with a group who had been playing with at work. We had just lost our DM and our space where we playing so it was our first time playing there. I stumbled through it, and it was mostly fun until our host started getting too much joy from torturing goblins.

I started running games because...

I didn't have anybody else willing to run games, and I wanted to play really, really badly. So I became the game master, and now I run games for my kiddos, since I really wanted to share the joys of TTRPG's with them.

My favorite shows/movies are

My current favorite show is Star Wars: Andor. I'm also a really big Trekkie, and Star Trek Lower Decks is my comfort show. I also like Comedies like Brooklyn 99 and What We Do In The Shadows. My favorite movies are The Big Lebowski, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.

How Willow runs games

I really love to roleplay, and find it to be one of the most fun parts of the game (there's a reason why everyone loved Tyrion in game of Thrones... At least for the first few seasons, and it wasn't his prowess in combat). One of my hobbies is improv, so coming up with responses on the fly, while keeping true to the nature off my characters is something I practice outside of TTRPG's as well. I like to create memorable NPC's with their own voices and personalities. If I can make my players willing to avenge a recurring NPC despite it not being required, I've done my job. I also like adding music into the mix of my games as well, and once started playing The Rainbow Connection to signal the start of a boss fight with Kermit the Frog. I also like letting my players find creative solutions to the challenges they encounter, like avoiding said the boss fight by allowing a hippoborn player seduce said muppet (this frog likes bigger girls). While my fight scenes admittedly have room for improvement, (they're not bad they're just basic) my number one goal is to make sure my players have fun, and are ultimately the ones in driver's seat for the story. I'm just there to let them give them enough direction and structure to keep the story coherent and give them a sense of accomplishment. Also, I'm big on the rule of cool, because everybody wants to have their hero moment.

I deal with rules issues by...

If someone says that I am using a rule wrong, we can look up the rule together and see who's right. If the whole group wants to play a rule different than written, I am willing to change it for the sake of fun, as long as it's enforced consistently.

I prep by

I prep by reading everything about the adventure and making sure the encounters are ready in the virtual table top. I look into music options for the encounters and just general background music. I also see if there are any ways to weave players backstories into the session.

When it comes to voices

I do my best to do fun voices at the table for NPCs. Since I'm trans, I can do deep and male voices really well, but still need to practice my female voices more.

Willow's ideal table

My table works well for players who like a lot of roleplaying and something that is going to have more of a fun and goofy vibe. I make a lot of jokes during session and try to create an environment that is relaxed and allows people to have a good time.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

If you're into Dimension 20, you're going to love my table. I enjoy helping tell stories with adventure, quite a bit of heart, and a lot of comedy. If you like bad puns and goofy NPCs, you're going to enjoy this table.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player tries to find creative and weird ways to solve problems. I want to have a table that fosters out of the box thinking and unbridled creativity, so my players can practice a fun skill that our normal lives generally try to get us to repress.

My table is not the place for...

My table is not a place for those wanting crunchy, heavy combat, or dark and gritty stories. It's also not going to be a table for those who love to mini/max and feel like they are competing against the game master or other players.
