About Richard

43, Scot, he/him. I began running and playing RPGs in 1997. I've run hundreds of games online, in person and at cons. I put in a lot of prep for games in Foundry: character art, music, maps, short films. If you've played Coriolis "Last Flight of the Ghazali" or Delta Green "Last Things Last" and "Impossible Landscapes", you may have seen my community maps in use.

People are always surprised when I tell them

I used to be a music journalist and failed musician and once interviewed the Strokes. Ask me about my Richard O'Brien story!

How Richard runs games

I worked in the media for 25 years and take gaming seriously. That said, I enjoy having a chuckle with players, especially when games take a heavy turn. The most important thing is for players and the GM to have fun, and everyone will get the time to shine. I've a broad knowledge of sci-fi and horror, the history of the British Isles and Europe from the Dark Ages to modern day. Investigative games will be full of research, and horror games will build tension through dialogue and mood. Combat will always tend to be short, decisive and deadly. I like helping players to take control of the narrative.

I love it when a player

feels able to shape the story in conversation with the GM and the other players, beyond what comes up on the dice.

I think min/maxing...

is ok in small doses when it's a character's MO. Being really strong in one area will always come at a price, which may not always be reflected in the stats. We'll agree on the most fun solution for each character when this crops up.

My table is not the place for...

talking over others when it can be helped. Usually, this is accidental and groups learn the cadence of conversation pretty quickly. There will be lots of time for everyone to talk and we won't move on in a scene until everyone has the chance to express what they want their character to do!
