About Violet

Hello! I’m a K-12 theater teacher in the NYC public school system. TTRPGs are a passion of mine and I even use them in school to teach things like character development, improvisation, math, creative problem solving, and building empathy. As a DM I like to run tables that are light-hearted and focus on fun and storytelling while giving the players as much leeway as possible to make the story their own. I always try to “yes, and” players unless it would absolutely ruin the game and experience for the rest of the players. I really love to do theater of the mind. I think it’s great when players can have their version of what things look like for themselves because I think it increases engagement. I do create mood boards so people have a jumping off point and I’ll also do original drawings for notable/important characters, places, items, etc.

How Violet runs games

I like to think that I have a good balance between role play focused and combat focused games. I love to create and run challenging combat situations to generate creative problem solving and teamwork. At the same time, I love to goof off with people a for few hours if that’s what the table needs. I use TTRPGs in my job as a public school theater teacher so I’ve worked with ages from 10 and up and am comfortable running both family-friendly and mature tables. Above all I believe in 4 things as a DM 1. All players feel safe and valued at the table regardless of identity, race, age, and how they prefer to play.* 2. I will “yes, and” almost anything unless it is harmful, offensive or just plain mean. 3. Honor a nat 20. Depending on the situation and context of nat 20 roll, you could basically run a turn in god mode. *Number one does not include fascists, transphobes, or zionists. I will make them feel bad and judged.

I deal with rules issues by...

Making a narrative-based ruling; if it tweaks a rule but makes a great story moment I’m all about it. If I can’t decide, I’ll roll even or odd on a d20 and let the dice gods decide.

My games focus on...

Being lighthearted and fun with plenty of role play. I do like to run combat a lot but I’d rather make a game that’s a puzzle or mystery to solve over being combat heavy.

Violet's ideal table

The best kind of table is a table of players with genuine curiosity, desire for teammwork, and a willingness to commit to both role play and a bit.
