About Christa
I have been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 2016, running campaigns for my friends since 2017, and GMing on StartPlaying since 2024. I strive to ensure that my games are a safe space for everyone - especially women and the LGBTQIA+ community - to play and enjoy themselves, and I never turn down an opportunity to introduce a new player to D&D or to give a Forever GM a well-deserved break! https://linktr.ee/TheCalicoDragon

How Christa runs games
For an example of my GMing style in action, you can check out the campaign I'm running for my personal friends - Calico Nation - over on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwMdkoZiCwDN87MXfqaVXMdAisBmIiAcj CHARACTER FOCUS I incorporate a heavy emphasis upon player characters and their individual story arcs. I aim to deliberately structure my games around my players' characters, and their wants, needs, goals, and flaws. Though my games tend to be structured with the main story functioning as the "A Plot", and player character arcs as "B Plots", you can expect your character's personal arc to tie into the "A Plot" in some capacity as well. IN-GAME POLITICS In-game politics are central to many of my games. (Note: real world political leanings do not enter into my fantasy setting.) Though not explicitly required, it would behoove players to have some familiarity with the goings-on of the in-game world at large, and to make note of the various big wigs that run the show. ROLEPLAY Characters and story are of the utmost importance to me, and I encourage my players to engage with and become invested in the world, the lore, and especially the NPCs! That is not to say that there won't be plenty of combat (I aim for at least one encounter every session, if the story allows for it), but if you are more interested in a kick-in-the-door, dungeon-crawl style of gameplay, or if you don't particularly enjoy interacting with NPCs, my GMing style may not be right for you. SELF DIRECTION While I would describe my campaigns as On Rails games (as opposed to a Sandbox), I strive never to railroad you, and I strongly encourage self direction. I set the scene and provide all the pertinent information, and allow my players to decide what to do with that knowledge. You can and will choose your own path and set your own goals. ATTENTION TO DETAIL As my mother always says, "This is a 'Paying Attention' kind of game." Very few details are extraneous or unintentional, and minor points of interest might tie into major plot points in the future! (🦋The Twitter link below is actually a Bluesky link🦋)

My favorite trope is...
... found family! I'm an absolute sucker for it, and it is truly a dream to get to help tell so many stories about unlikely strangers finding what their hearts were missing with one another's company.
Rules are...
... guidelines! My role, as a GM, is to curate a story for my players, and if the Rules As Written don't facilitate that, I have no qualms about making adjustments!
