About Kyle

I'm a newer D&D adventurer in the scope of the age of D&D. I started playing in my first game a little over 6 years ago at a bachelor party one-shot weekend and instantly fell in love with the game. Roughly a year later I tried my hand at running a game and this generated the spark that has led to the 5-year "forever DM" journey. Over the last 5 years I have ran 2 home-brew campaigns from start to finish, 13 one-shots with most of them being new-player oriented to teach friends how to play, and have a current home-brew campaign playing on Twitch. I love customizing my games to the players at my table and will add in story arcs revolving around players backstories and interests as we craft the story together. I'm a firm believer that the dice tell the story and I am just the narrator describing what you see in front of you. I love teaching new players the basics of the game and watching their imaginations sore when they get hooked into a story!

How Kyle runs games

Most who have sat at my table would probably agree that I lean more towards roleplay than I do combat but still have interesting combats weaved into the story. I personally like to have a balanced session whether that be one-shots or campaigns. When we sit down to play it would be expected that you will experience equal amounts of combat with roleplay mixed in throughout. Additionally, I am of the belief that not all combat has to end in a fight to the death, including the BBEG encounter to end out a story. I leave this discretion to the players at my table to decide if you will kill the enemy or not in combat and will never force one outcome or the other. Most importantly, I believe in an equal share of voice for all players at the table. It is always my goal to give equal encounters to each player if anything is personalized from backstories and not have anyone feeling left out by the end of the play. Additionally, each player will have the same level of player agency and will not be "railroaded" into making specific decisions or journey to specific areas they are not interested in. You lead the story, the dice decide if what you try to do happens, and together we describe what everyone sees.

I once ran a session...

where my players were so sucked into the story and took on the role of their characters so deeply that when one found a nearly-dead long-lost love as part of a story arc we had to take a short break for them to gather themselves as they started crying real tears. It was magical in the best way!

My favorite trope is...

intrigue! The deception, deceit, trickery, sneaking behind backs bother literally and figuratively always lead to seat-edge story telling that ropes everyone in for the next big reveal!

My games focus on...

the players at the table. Every story, whether it's a module game or homebrew, is customized to my players, their backstories, and what they went to see and experience in game.

Kyle's ideal table

My table is rules-relaxed. With the exception of a few house rules discussed and agreed with before the game starts, I run my games with the rule of cool where we compromise on the rules as written in favor of whatever cool thing you want to do. My perfect player would be equally interested in roleplay and combat while giving equal air time to each member of the party. We are an adventuring party, not a superhero after all.

I love it when a player

crafts a decent backstory including people to possibly interact with, motivations for their character, and a side-story arc that may be explored within the main story.

I think min/maxing...

has a time and place. If you're playing a level 20 one-shot fighting god(s), ancient dragons, and/or other world-ending creatures *cough, cough Tarrasque cough, cough* then by all means min/max and craft the most OP character you can. Otherwise, balance your PC for both roleplay and combat.

My table is not the place for...

main character energy. We are and adventuring party, give everyone at the table equal air time and don't try to steal the show from them in RP moments or combat mechanics.
