About Lucas

Hey there! I'm Lucas and I've been running games since 2012 when I ran my first D&D 3.5e game. It was hilarious and clunky but I fell in love with it. Since then I have expanded my repertoire of games with Traveller, 4th and 5th editions of D&D, Savage Worlds, Masks, Call of Cthulhu and many more. I'm a DM local to Monterey Bay and I run games with an emphasis on role-play and character interaction. I'm a former improv comedian and I love getting to roll with my players and dive into what makes their characters tick. I run games online or in person, so I hope you join me and we can tell some amazing stories together!

I got started GMing...

Because my friends inspired and encouraged me to tell a story! The game masters I first played with were far from the "forever DM", they wanted to get to be a player and when I showed an interest in running a game they jumped on it and gave me resources, books, advice and encouragement!

How Lucas runs games

I am a role-play and narrative driven DM. While I really enjoy tactical combat, I find that I like to spend much more time with the players exploring, talking and diving into the details of the world, their relationships and the problems at hand. I always strive for combat to be narratively fulfilling as apposed to technically challenging. A player at my table who only wants to fight will likely be very bored.

I once ran a session...

with 12 players! It was the last session of two different groups that I had been running game for in parallel stories within the same city. For the last two sessions the groups met up and agreed to work together to fight the BBEG. I will never do that again, far too chaotic to work.

My games focus on...

Interpersonal conflict and foils. If your character has a fatal flaw, you better bet that I'll be exploiting it for maximum narrative payoff

Lucas's ideal table

My table is relaxed and silly, even when we dive into very serious topics I always strive to maintain a more feel good atmosphere. I'm not bothered with minor tangents as we play because I know I can bring the conversation back on topic quick enough. A player who is alright with a bit of meandering conversation will fit in well.

I love it when a player

Gives me a backstory that has details that I can incorporate into the story. Friends, family and enemies. Goals that they are pursuing.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Continually suggest actions for other players. It's perfectly fine in most cases to offer advice or opinions, but when a player is directing others it can become a serious drain on the game.

I think min/maxing...

Is a perfectly fine way to build your character as long as you didn't Min/Max your way out of any salient character traits beyond "very cool" and "hyper competent"
