About Stranger Davo

Hello there! I'm David, a GM with over 13 years experience, in-person and online. The majority of my time has been with D&D 4e/5e and Dungeon World. However, I also have experience with other systems such as Daggerheart, Kids On Bikes, and The Quiet Year; familiarity with Vampire: The Masquerade, Cyberpunk RED, Infinite Galaxies, Delta Green, Fiasco, and more; and greatly enjoy learning and utilising new systems to best suit the needs of my players and the story. I love to collaborate and build worlds, stories, and characters with my players, offering highly personalised and customised experiences. I have predominantly run and enjoy long-term campaigns, but also have experience with shorter campaigns and one-shots. I am flexible and easy-going, and like to build a fun, safe, and comfortable place for players and GM alike to have good time and tell some stories. While I am located in Sydney, Australia, I am flexible and accomodating with my timezones.

I ran my first game...

Back in 2013 a friend was gifted a D&D 4e starter set, and was looking to try it out. I volunteered to give it go, and have been GMing ever since, including with several of those same initial players.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing games: video games, board games, or TTRPGs. Working on one of my creative outlets: video production, making music, writing fiction and scripts, developing games.

How Stranger Davo runs games

I cater my style to my players, their desires and preferences, and what best suits the tone and narrative, and ultimately best achieves the kind of the story we collectively wish to tell. I can offer heavy roleplay with light, narrative-driven combat; light roleplay with challenging, elaborate combat encounters; good, dumb fun escapades with minimal mechanics, or just about anything in between. I enjoy nothing more than collaborating with my players to build rich, personalised stories and worlds, intertwining their characters and choices with the greater narrative. I make use of images and videos, background music, custom maps and tokens, and more in service of immersion, engagement, and enjoyment. I love customising systems, characters, items, and more to create unique and personalised content and experiences for my players to enjoy.

My games focus on...

The Story. What this means exactly will vary depending on the style, tone, and themes of the story we wish to collaboratively tell. The system we use, the focus/balance of roleplay vs tactical vs strategic, the adherence to traditional rules, the entire flow of play is all in service to The Story.

Rules are...

Guides. Tools to help provide consistency and suggest how something may be attempted or achieved. They are not perfect. They are not the be all, end all. They are to be bent to our will in service of the most enjoyable experience.

When it comes to voices

As a GM, I find it can help differentiate between speaking characters, evoke personality, or suggest certain themes, tones, or connections. For players, I find it can help in inhabiting a character, and to delineate between in-character and out-of-character talk.

Stranger Davo's ideal table

I personally most enjoy a table that is dynamic. We can have a good time and a good laugh, and then dive into the serious stuff with some good roleplay and significant story. I have GMd for new and experienced players, heavy and light roleplayers, min-maxers, and agents of pure chaos, sometimes all at the same table. Whatever your experience, style of play, and goals are, I believe we can create an enjoyable experience together, so long as we are all working together towards our common goal: to tell our story - whatever that may be - and to have a good time doing it.

I love it when a player

Makes a bold, character-driven choice for the sake of the narrative, puts their fate in my hands, and trusts that I will do something interesting with it.

I think metagaming...

Is ultimately unavoidable on some level, should generally be avoided in its extremes, but can be used for good too when utilised in making the tonally or thematically appropriate choice.

I think min/maxing...

Is fine at the right table. If that's how you as a player get the most enjoyment out of play, then by all means enjoy it. Just be sure it's not bleeding beyond the confines of your player, negatively impacting other players or the game, or preventing you from enjoying other aspects of play.
