About Sir Oliver Purrington
Cats. Tea. Fishing. Kayaking. Books. These are some of my favorite things. I focus my campaigns on role play and storytelling. But really, hello, I am Daniel. I hide behind my cats and will frequently have them purring into the mic during session. Yes the kitten here is Sir Oliver. I have been playing TTRPG since my brother introduced me to AD&D in the mid-80's. It was hard finding people to play with in my small Wyoming town, so I started to host and DM my own games. I have been a DM for about 30 years in most versions of DnD.

My favorite shows/movies are
Rom Coms, because real life is exciting enough.
People are always surprised when I tell them
I lived in a tent in the mountains for three years because I loved it so much. It was while I was in high school, and I still graduated. I had a 1.2 GPS, but that really didn't matter 30 years later. And, I'd do it again.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Working, cuddling my cats and dog, fishing, kayaking, playing video games, and reading. I am currently pursuing an Associates in Arts, Fine Arts. Specifically to learn drawing and painting. i certainly don't need another degree, but this is a passion I have let simmer for 30 years.
How Sir Oliver Purrington runs games
I really enjoy roleplay and creating immersive worlds. Be prepared to act as your character would and have a good backstory. I will always reward a player who thinks creatively within their character structure. As a player and DM I really enjoy fast paced combat. Creative combat styles and uses of tools and techniques will get you everywhere. I will include plenty of combat, as long as it is appropriate and fitting for the campaign/situation. I have been a huge fan of traps and puzzles, but they can be a very divisive tool. I will work with the party to determine how much they would like to include in the game. I love custom maps and images and I am currently building my library. Please be patient and give me feedback on what you would like to see. Due to an injury to my vocal folds I cannot do voices, but I am looking at voice mod software.

I deal with rules issues by...
defaulting to the player. I always try to keep play moving forward without lots of side and rule talk. Questions will be dealt with as quick as possible. If I know the definitive, I will say. I make notes of rules and research after the session to post in Discord.
My games focus on...
story with combat interspersed. I focus heavily on making sure all players have a chance to play.
Rules are...
Generally good and followed. If a player wishes to do something cool that bends a rule, I generally allow it.
Sir Oliver Purrington's ideal table
I do really like a balanced group of melee, range and heals. It gets very challenging to provide a good game when one of these roles is missing. I try to let my players play what they enjoy though. I want to know if someone is new, so I can gauge how much assistance they will need. I like to help new players, and will ask team members at the table to help as needed. Although I always stop one person telling another how to play their character. I require my players to provide a backstory prior to their first session. I want to know what the characters motivations are and why they are in the campaign. Part of the backstory should include 1-3 roleplaying hooks. These hooks are used by the player through each session to help stay in character. The most important function of my table is an inclusive and cooperative table. I don't allow hate speech of any kind. I keep all sexual assault, harassment and child assault from my table. I try hard not to have pet death. If you have your pet join in combat they will become a combatant and can die. I will always have a discussion with new players to find what triggers they have and avoid them in the game.

I think metagaming...
gets boring after a while. I request all my players to stay in character as much as possible. For example, a character wouldn't say, "I have 2 HP's left". They would say, "I'm hurting really bad and can't stop bleeding." I ask that real life talk take place before or after a session.
I think min/maxing...
has it's place. It depends on the campaign that is running on how I feel about min/maxing. In a RP heavy campaign or group, it can get boring for me and the player(s). Sometimes if I have group that is all min/maxing I will intentionally through things out that are outside their skill sets.
My table is not the place for...
Politics, hate speech, or religion. Unless it is in character. I require all players to respect each other.
