About Rich - Renegade Rolls
I'm a DM/GM who specialises in the narrative / and story focussed aspects of TTRPGs. I've run loads of systems and enjoy the mechanics, but where roleplaying games really shine and create experiences you don't find in any other medium is in the emergent collaborative stories that we get to tell together. With that in mind, when running published modules I'm always looking to make the game personal to the PCs. In Curse of Strahd, it's fine that our gloomy vampire friend will hate any adventures who try and topple him... but it's much more fun (and memorable!) when Strahd hates YOU! I'm happy running all sorts of systems, D&D 5E is the one I'm most experienced in, but I don't claim to have a true depth to my knowledge of the system - if we come across something I don't have an answer to, I prefer a quick ruling that feels fair, and then we get on with the story. My games won't be for you if you elevate the rules and mechanics over the story that we get to tell together. Having said that, I don't fudge dice - the story of ALMOST defeating the BBEG but dying heroically is just as good as the one where the heroes win the day. I'm also an improv comedian so I'm very used to thinking on my feet, making sure that I've got something for any situation, regardless of how off-the-rails my players plans get! For the curious, I also have a YouTube channel called Renegade Rolls where I share DM/GM advice, and an Actual Play channel where you can see me in action!

I got started GMing...
...oddly naturally: I started as a player who wanted to create characters; it was a natural progression to want to create worlds.
My favorite system of all Time is
Oooooh that's tough. Possibly Index Card RPG (ICRPG) because for me it hits the balance between a solid rules set and the flexibility of a more light-touch system. I'd highly recommend it, especially the Blood & Snow setting which is a sort of primordial / tribal fantasy setting.
How Rich - Renegade Rolls runs games
My GM style is very much on the roleplay-heavy end of the spectrum, but we can keep up the storytelling even as we roll for initiative. My games are all about finding the story of the heroes, as well as the overarching story of the main adventure: Lord of the Rings is actually about the relationship between the Hobbits just as much as taking the Ring to Mount Doom. When building worlds or choosing established settings to play in, I love the feeling of the characters being small in a big world, but still having the power to change things (maybe for the better!) - I'll avoid super grimdark settings where all hope is lost: giving the PCs at least a chance to save the world is where my happy place is! I love using improv techniques to keep roleplay feeling fresh and fast. No awkward silences when you run out of things to say, I'll just shout "we cut to..." and the story moves on. Having said that, I still enjoy tactical combat and the challenging players. My NPCs fight smart, they run away when they're outnumbered. The Monsters Know What They're Doing was a big inspiration for me in how to run combats. The fate of the world hinging on the Death Save or an unlikely shot with a bow is where so many great memories can be made.

Rules are...
...there to aid the fun that everyone has at the table. We need rules and dice and things, otherwise we'd be a writers' room. Rules help us shape the stories we tell as a group, but shouldn't be placed on a pedastal above having a great time in our games.
