About Fey

I've been a GM for over 15 years now, and have been playing since the late 90's and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2e. I have run Dungeons and Dragons (0e, B/X, 1e, 3.5, 5e), Vampire The Masquerade, Call of Cthulhu, Fate, Cyberpunk, Mechwarrior, Pathfinder (1e, 2e), and Traveller in that time. I'm a huge fan of rules-lite games that allow for quick resolution. I have a strong emphasis on player agency and player driven stories. I love giving my players a sandbox and seeing what stories they want to tell. I also specialize in taking the ideas my players have about their characters backstories, enemies, and friends, and weaving those into scenarios seamlessly. I often work with published modules, but rarely run them out of the box. I like to customize them to the players and characters at my table in order to make them more engaging and enjoyable experiences. I am a trans lesbian, queer friendly, and inclusive. I will use safety tools if desired, though have for the most part used informal interrupts and messages if any lines are crossed. I believe in strong session 0s to establish expectations and lines. Both on my side and that of my players. I have a low tolerance for disruptive players and am not afraid to eject them from my table.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

I'd bring Traveller, Rules Cyclopedia, and Basic Roleplaying Universal Game Engine. That means I got sci fi, fantasy, and then anything else I can think up covered.

My favorite books are

My favorite fantasy series by far is the Wheel of Time series, I love the foreshadowing, plot weaving, character development, and world building. I also enjoy Dune, Ender's Game, Warbreaker, and the early Honor Harrington novels. I read new things as well, I'm currently reading Apothecary Diaries.

When I'm not running games I'm...

prepping to run games! I am a bit hyper-fixated. I read novels for entertainment but also idea harvesting for future campaigns. I read published modules, campaigns, and megadungeons to determine if I want to run them, or get ideas for my own campaigns. I watch DM YouTubers for their ideas.

How Fey runs games

I prefer games with players that have an urge to drive the story, and I participate as a neutral arbiter. I will work in backstories and NPCs as relevant, and flesh out the stories and narratives that emerge naturally from what my players decide to do. I like worlds that feel real, where actions have consequences, and the rewards at the end of a campaign feel earned. This is typically referred to as emergent gameplay, though I do make sure that it all works with the narratives my players desire. I enjoy quick combat that is lethal, and I prefer this because it encourages creative thinking on how to avoid combat and invests players into the world they are inhabiting. I am equally sad at the death of a character as my party. I want my players to be invested in the world, and enjoy weaving their ideas and their backstories into whatever adventure, sandbox, or campaign we create. I tend to do voices, but please don't expect quality. I can barely maintain consistency sometimes! However, please engage in roleplay, I feel that is the most important aspect of these games.

I deal with rules issues by...

Making a ruling during the session and reviewing the rule after the session. This allows the action to continue and we can take some time to think about the decision after. I take player input, and relay the final thoughts to them.

My favorite trope is...

Rags to riches. Nothing to me is more satisfying than down on their luck fuck ups become heroes, become wealthy, or just punch the system that ground them down in the face.

My games focus on...

Player agency and player driven stories. You get to tell me where you want to go and what you want to do. We then get to build a story together that is satisfying and engaging.

Fey's ideal table

My ideal table is motivated to explore their characters and how they interact with the world. I love providing plenty of options, levers, and buttons for players to press and interact with and just see what happens. My ideal players are thinking about the campaign and how they are going to solve whatever predicament they got themselves in between sessions, ask me questions, and maybe even do some light character RP with each other.

I am for a vibe that's...

relaxed but focused on the game. I respect your time and want to keep table talk to a minimum. My players mention that I am very skilled at getting people back focused on the game when topics and attention starts to drift.

I love it when a player

is in love with their character and motivated to achieve those goals. Is willing to take risks, and be willing to mourn the loss of a character if it all goes wrong. A player who has a character that has goals to accomplish that may not line up with the end of a campaign.

I think metagaming...

has its place. You are adventurers and should be suspicious of a dungeon. I want you to think of the puzzles put before you as much your character does. I think there are good and bad uses of metagaming. Breaking the table's verisimilitude is bad. Using it to have genre savvy characters is good.
