About Nora K.B.

I've been running games around the table since 2010! I have lots of experience running games on Discord, live streaming on Twitch, and playing in text chats. I love creating spaces where people can really express themselves and explore what makes collective storytelling powerful, while having tools to stay safe and sane doing it. :) I am nonbinary and queer, and often incorporate these themes into play. I intend to have a welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ players and those who support and ally with them.

I became a GM because

I wanted to share my creative vision in a live and interactive way. Seeing people engage with my worlds and explore themselves and their characters in my games scratches an itch that I don't think I could fulfill any other way. :D

People are always surprised when I tell them

I studied viola, piano, voice and harp in high school and college! I love participating in small ensemble music and don't have enough opportunities to play these days.

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing other TTPRGs, posting in roleplay threads, reading and playing PC games <3

How Nora K.B. runs games

I'm a collaborative DM who doesn't like to spend too long in combat, but when we do need to throw down with the baddies I like to at least try to make it interesting. I share narrative power with players while also letting the dice do the talking, especially when it makes for hilarious moments. I also really enjoy painting an immersive scene and building fascinating and fantastical worlds, and letting players freely explore them. I'm fluent in both theater of the mind and board-based combat, and try to use what makes sense for the group and the situation. I love using character voices, but you don't have to do the same to have a good time at my table :) I think anyone can get into TTRPGs and encourage newbies to try it out. No question is a dumb question if it comes from genuinely wanting to engage and learn. I also focus on safety tools and setting expectations with a session zero. I think we play better when we have an idea of what we want from a game, while allowing the flexibility for that to grow or change.

I deal with rules issues by...

Looking it up if it can be found quickly, and if it can't I make a ruling and a note to research it later. I'm also in favor of hacking games to adapt to the table's needs and support using third party content where I feel it's appropriate.

I prep by

setting up a dramatic situation, reviewing NPCs and their history with the PCs, and then adapting to what happens in play. Also by choosing music that will set the mood I want to create.

My games focus on...

player agency and the consequences of PC's actions within the fictional world, and how they change it in turn.

Nora K.B.'s ideal table

My ideal table is with players who want to jump in and "yes, and" each other's ideas, and create amazing moments not just for themselves but as a group. I love being able to sit back and popcorn dramatic moments between PCs, as well as painting the scenes they happen in. I welcome anyone with creative energy, and I fully support those who might need a little confidence boost or extra time or space to articulate their thoughts. I appreciate players who engage deeply with mechanics, and believe they bring value to the table, but feel that appreciation for roleplay is of the utmost importance.

I am for a vibe that's...

Able to go into serious moments and darker places, but at the end of the day here to play a game and have fun with each other. I love to laugh, and to be surprised and intrigued by player choices.

I love it when a player

contributes to the lore, invents NPCs and locations, and adds their own flair to the world.

I think min/maxing...

can be fun if you're willing to engage with the story beyond just "how broken can I make this build". Sometimes what we can do with systems is ridiculous. But I'd prefer it not to be a player's sole focus.
