To improvise imaginative stories together where we can problem solve, overcome obstacles, choose hope, and carve a better reality together? It is my deep and abiding joy. Storytelling is an ancient tradition and it is a gift to share this skill with others. I began GM'ing many years ago after I finished my doctoral work in storytelling. Adding my theatre training alongside of my decades of community building, these three threads spin together to create the warp of our story's tapestry. I love to teach, guide, and encourage. I listen, watch, and celebrate communal and cooperative story telling. I love to nurture, cajole, and challenge a group of people towards a common goal. To find your story threads, grab onto them, and weave them into a cohesive tapestry that we can each remember with satisfaction. Whether we choose Dungeons and Dragons 5e, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, a simple one page rule set, or something yet to be released - together we will use the mechanics of the system and our imaginations to create something beautiful.

I got started GMing...

with a big group of friends who all enjoyed gaming together. I pulled out a one sheet Grant Howitt game and ran a table of 10 players in my basement. (What was I thinking?!) It was delightful. I slid into D&D 5e with One Shots that became mini-campaigns and suddenly the "Forever GM" seat called.

Nurturing plants in my native and healing plant habitat. It's a new discipline this year and there is so much to learn! I'm also caring for my medical service dog, Ani, who is always by my side and shows up for games!

How Nix runs games

I am highly collaborative and player driven as a GM. I want to check in and create games for you. My joy is to set my players up to meet their goals. Consent is key. Tell me what you're looking for and I will do my best to create the chance to experience it. My own boundaries are that I am not willing to provide horror, manipulative mind games, or anything in game with themes of genocide. If people in the real world are living it in their daily lives against their will, I don't turn it into game play. This includes racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and similar themes. I have a host of Game Settings at my fingertips, particularly fun one-shot options for gatherings that don't require long lead times. If you're looking to try out character based Role Play without a ton of math or mechanics to learn first, message me and we can talk about some fun simple settings. I have a Virtual Table Top(VTT) and I currently don't use special effects on my custom maps in order to keep things accessible for those with limited tech.

My games focus on...

Player agency, backstory, choice, emotional impact, and interests. I really love to build my stories around what my players offer. This is part of why I use video in session, so I can read body language as we go and dial story up or down as appropriate - whether that battle or banter.

Rules are...

a great framework and guideline - and we are creating a world together in our imagination and telling a story together. Rules help us understand it and guide it, but we don't have let them dictate it. Imagination, creativity, bartering with the GM - these are all delights at my table.

When it comes to voices

it is often a surprise what comes out! Whether changing pitch, speed, and facial expression will show you which character is speaking or if it will be an Irish accented rogue greeting you with illicit information at the bar - we'll both find out when I open my mouth and something comes out!

Nix's ideal table

My tables are collaborative and role play heavy. We gather on camera and enjoy delving into story and emotion. We are queer and nuero-diverse. We laugh, we build trust, we use safety tools, and in time we may cry and find that the stories we have told have created amazing relationships we never thought possible.

I love it when a player

experiences that Moment when a detail of their backstory shows up and has deep relevance to the plot and they really see and feel that they Matter in this world and in this story. That they are woven into it and wove it WITH me. It is the BEST feeling to see eyes light up.

My table is not the place for...

number crunchy combat nerds. Gosh, I love it, too, as a player, but I am not skilled at providing it as a GM. Neither can I provide grimdark horror. I'll join you as a player at the many tables out there with awesome GM's with those skills, it's just not me!
