About Adam

I'm an American living abroad with 30 years of experience playing RPGs. My go-to is Dungeons & Dragons (3.5 & 5e), though I have dabbled in other games such as Pathfinder, Rifts, Shadowrun, Call of Cthlulu, and the d6 system. I've run games for old-school veterans, people completely new to RPGs, and just about everyone in between.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Trying to teach the next generation of high school students about the values of knowing history as well as fostering a love of role-playing games in the student community.

How Adam runs games

I'm looking to both introduce new people to the game, as well as perhaps run a longer-term campaign if there is appropriate interest. While I have run a number of combat-heavy games before, within the last couple of years I've been branching out into more role-play and theater of the mind. For VTTs, I've been using Roll20 and AboveVTT for a few years, but I'm really keen on improving my skill on Alchemy VTT.

I deal with rules issues by...

Hearing all the evidence presented for arguments, making a decision and moving on in order to continue the flow of the game, and going back to make changes if necessary if a mistake was made.

Adam's ideal table

My ideal table is kind people who are willing to come to the group in search of a fun and collaborative experience without it coming at the expense of someone else. While my players have certainly had selfish characters, I prefer players who find a way to engage in the campaign instead of having to be dragged in, or players who use their familiarity with the to make those with less experience feel not included. For me, the best parts of role-playing games are the collaborative aspects. My preferred table is where players can come to enjoy a game and take a break for some well-deserved fun. That being said, I like to keep a game moving, so my expectation is that players are coming to engage in the story with their full attention.

I think metagaming...

Can be fine. I like when my players end up talking about best strategies to use their strength to defeat challenges, and therefore feel as though they've genuinely accomplished something. I am not a fan of those who use personal knowledge in the game to accomplish something their character couldn't.

I think min/maxing...

Is an acceptable style of character creation; however, only if the group has had a chance to discuss the impacts of a party with some players who have min/maxed while others haven't.

My table is not the place for...

Taking out life's frustrations on others, conduct that keeps others from fully participating, or people who come strictly to "win" at D&D.
