About Matthew

Hi, and welcome all! I started playing D&D about 5 years ago, and I've been hooked ever since! I LOVE the storytelling and the diverse tactical combat. If you've been looking for a game focusing on individualized character arcs and challenging but balanced combat, you'll have a great time at my table! I love working with my players to help them feel welcome, to tell the kind of story they want to tell, and to have the kind of experience they want to have. Let's work together on an unforgettable tabletop experience! Can't wait to work with you!

I became a GM because

after trying it out for some friends, I found I really loved being a GM. I found it really gratifying to carefully craft stories and adventures for my players and watch them open them up like presents!

My favorite shows/movies are

The Lord of the Rings, Across the Spiderverse, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars (original and prequel trilogies are my favorite, but I also really loved Andor, Rogue One, and the Clone Wars), Inception, The Dark Knight, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Castelvania, Arcane

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing video games, writing music, working on my novels, or working my day job as an engineer.

How Matthew runs games

By far, my favorite part of D&D is storytelling. Expect a deep and rich plot that integrates with the world-building and relies on your character and their background. Expect your character to go from choosing who wins and loses a turf war to leading armies and liberating nations. Your character will be compelled into moral dilemmas, forging bonds, and overcoming personal weaknesses while capitalizing on strengths in order to not only survive, but to change the world. I have a strong belief in carefully planned and balanced combat encounters. Some battles will be trivial while others will be grueling, but they will all tell a story and offer tactical opportunities or challenges. I have the objective of your original characters making it through to the end of the adventure, but we will discuss the best way to move forward should your character perish in combat. Does the party engage a new member to scour the outer planes for your character's soul in an attempt to revive them? Do they quest to find the precious gem required to resurrect your character? Or do they pass on, having fulfilled their calling in this life? Above all, I want everyone to have a good time as we take a break from reality, so I am always available to chat with you about concerns you have or even just ideas that might make the experience more fun.

My games focus on...

narrative and combat! I like to add puzzles and exploration here and there as well, but for the most part, the games will focus on narrative and combat. Nothing's more exciting than seeing my players' characters develop both in power and in character, and my games will seek to foster that!

Rules are...

what make the game fun! Nothing's more satisfying or enjoyable than watching my players come up with creative applications and solutions within the confines of the established rules. Rules are rules, and they provide the limitation that makes success so exciting!

Matthew's ideal table

Above all, I want the table to feel fun, safe, and engaging. I want to run a table with players who are excited to play and eager to help each other have fun too. I want them to come up with creative ways to use their features and spells. I want to immerse my players into their characters. I want them to feel like their characters are being challenged and then feel that they are powerful for overcoming those challenges. Above all, I want people to feel like they can look forward to coming to my table, forgetting the rest of the world for a bit, and just have a good time.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

storytelling and character development!

I love it when a player

uses a spell or feature effectively outside of combat, especially in a creative way. There's nothing more enjoyable for me than seeing the unique ways my players choose to tackle the challenges their characters face.

I think min/maxing...

is fun! Players should be rewarded for strategically constructing their characters. It'll be up to me to create balanced encounters. That being said, excessive min/maxing can result in unbalance between the party, which can make it less fun for others, so be mindful.
