About Larry

I enjoy all kinds of board games and RPGs. As a GM I prefer theater of the mind to very detailed simulations. I enjoy puzzles and narrative arcs that are not simply combat based. I've been playing for many years. I enjoy virtual table tops but I tend to use very simple elements, I think sometimes virtual table tops make RPGs feel too much like an arcade game. I'm told I bring a lot of humor (mostly not twisted), to even the darkest most dangerous encounters and story arcs without robbing the story of their emotional heft.

I got started GMing...

In the early 80's when I bought the "Red Box" beginner game and brought it to the war gaming group I started in high school.

How Larry runs games

I'm told I run a fun table. I'm told I'm a "gamer's" game master. My favorite compliment is that is beginners really enjoy playing with me, learning the game and how to inhabit their character. Experienced players enjoy the humor and depth I bring to the story. I improvise, but i also practice. I enjoy role playing game sessions that focus on collaborative and improvisational storytelling. Combat is really fun as a storytelling context. There 's frequently combat checks, it doesn't mean there's physical fighting, When it gets grim my job is to keep the fighting spectacular which means trying to "take out' your character in the most entertaining possible way.

Rules are...

More like very good guidelines than actual rules.

Larry's ideal table

For Fantasy settings I love run "expensive" magic (components, how you "know" the spell, spell slots etc) to very low magic games. Factions are a big deal as is corruption . Long rests in an encounter "region" are not often a good idea (well except in beginner rules games). For Sci-Fi it's almost entirely Rule of Cool. I enjoy the problem solving aspects of adventures and lean into this with more "sciency" player objective each session. I really like it to feel like a "one shot" each time we play (and frequently run "one shots"). I'm much more interested in creating fun player interactions than complex worlds you must thoroughly understand to have fun.
