About jared grace
My name is Jared Grace, I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, I have a wife and 2 wonderful kids, and I have been a dungeon master for DnD games for over 14 years. I’ve been a player a couple of times, but my true passion is telling the stories of players who come in and out of my games. I grew up in Los Angeles and was first introduced to tabletop games by a bunch of grognogs at my LGS. Their creativity and willingness to write stories for everyone’s enjoyment instilled a love for the game in me that I have yet to find in any other game. I DMed for fun at my LGS for years, and when I moved to Washington state for college, I converted my entire friend group (and eventually my wife) into players. Nowadays, I’m based in New York, but we still have a long-running campaign that we meet up for virtually every Sunday. Outside of DnD, I work as an assistant winemaker and love cooking, gaming, and spending time with my family.

How jared grace runs games
I prefer a mix of theatre of the mind and maps, utilizing DnD Beyond maps for combat and our collective imagination for the rest. Homebrew is my jam. The rules are definitely guidelines to me, and I am always down to change them if it means more fun for everyone. I generally like to gauge the vibes of the group I’m with and see what they want out of the game, then I bend and change to fit the group. Of course, if you want to play completely by the rules, I am also capable of that, but I have always felt that making the world and the story your own makes for a much more immersive and enjoyable experience. Basically, my DM style is player-first. I view my role as primarily the facilitator of the players’ story, and my top priority is making sure they get the experience they want out of their campaign. I like to check in with players frequently to make sure everyone is excited about the direction of the story, and I’m always happy to consult with players about things like their goals for their character, arcs they want to go through, and how to enhance the experience of the group.

I deal with rules issues by...
Consulting the group. Rules are quite literally a construct. We can do whatever we want and if the group thinks it’s more fun to do something else then so be it! I like to have things like this sorted out in a session zero but am more than comfortable changing things on the fly.
If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...
My wife says that Baz Luhrmann would definitely be the answer because my games have a certain flair for the dramatic. I really like to surprise my players and add details that will enhance the moment, whether that be an intense combat, a spooky dungeon crawl, or an emotional death scene.
When it comes to voices
I got ‘em’. But on a more serious note, I love voices. I feel like they make the game so much more fun and memorable. They allow players to get more comfortable with being a part of the story and make me more comfortable role playing too! Almost more importantly, they help me keep npcs straight too
