About Samuel

I'm a former stage performer, current educator, writer and video game enthusiast. I've been playing TTRPG's since my brother found the blue box in our games cabinet and we wanted to play. During my time as a player I've constantly tried to stretch my skills by playing characters outside of my comfort zone. Playing paladin's or bards when I would rather be quiet in the back as a rouge or ranger. My love of stories and desire to be a better role player lead me to running games. I've been a game master on and off for most of my life. I have two games currently running for groups of my friends that have been running for more than two years. With these games, goal is to tell broader, more rich stories in collaboration with the players.

I became a GM because

I wanted to tell stories with my friends. And then they had their own stories they wanted to tell and I thought "We can tell like six stories at a time!?! Awesome!"

People are always surprised when I tell them

When I was younger, as a stage performer, I was a Mad Scientist. It was a job title but man did I take it literally. I wasn't an Evil Mad Scientist, the job was educating and entertaining kids, but I was crazy! I've kept a lot of those skills alive at my tables.

How Samuel runs games

As a GM I want to work with my players to craft a story. Combat is a part of the story, but intrigue, horror, tension, strong character bonds, and friendship are also important parts of it. I like to learn about the players characters, what motivates them in their actions and what are they hoping for them in the long run. My goal is to build up player characters and craft a satisfying story within the adventure, but also individually for the player and their charcter. But, much like the Dread Pirate, "I'll most likely kill you in the morning." I like to form a faux adversarial relationship with the players, but it's all in fun. As the GM I embody the trials, threats and dangers the party face, and so I like to remind them that sometimes, the goal of the narrative is to stop them in their tracks.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Peter Segal and David Zucker.

I once ran a session...

My players were all set for a TPK. They were surrounded, inside magical darkness and were near 0 HP. The magic user pulled a sneaky! They used the darkness to hide themselves too, and teleported everyone to "Safety". It was a 200 foot pit and they still nearly died. Best session ending!
