About Keith

Hey everyone, my name is Keith. I've been a GM for over 25 years, starting with Dungeons and Dragons, but learning and running many other different systems, as well. I love weaving stories cooperatively with players. When playing games of any kind, I get the most enjoyment from discovery - what's over that hill? How will they react to this? What's going to happen next. So, as a GM, I prefer to run games in a way where I'm less of a "Referee" and more another member of the collaborative group. Though much of my experience is with traditional RPGs, I've moved more towards more narrative games

I ran my first game...

with my friends from school at 10 years old. And I've been enjoying gaming ever since!

My favorite books are

The Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson Gentleman Bastard series, by Scott Lynch The Century Trilogy, by Ken Follett Hyperion Cantos, by Dan Simmons

My favorite system of all Time is

Daggerheart! In my opinion, it's the perfect mix of narrative and traditional RPG, and it's easy to lean in either direction in your game.

How Keith runs games

As a GM, I prefer to run games: - Collaboratively: I don't want to tell you my story, I want the table to create the story together. - Dynamically: Character growth, relationship dynamics, faction balance, I like a game world that is constantly in flux as the PCs move through and affect it, but also maintaining a living world that continues to evolve in areas that the PCs aren't currently active. - More roleplay-oriented: In most RPGs, things will happen that threaten to cause HP to go down, and that's part of the tension that makes games fun, but I prefer the back-and-forth of roleplay, both PC/NPC and PC/PC interactions. - Rule of Cool: If given the chance, I prefer to "yes, and" player ideas that potentially lead to scenes that are more interesting, exciting, and/or risky.

My games focus on...

narrative, problem solving, and engagement. I like all actions to begin and end with the fiction. I love throwing my players a curve and finding out how they deal with it. And having engaged players makes for a great game that is easy and fun for me to run.

Rules are...

important! But, so is the rule of cool, and if someone has an idea that is interesting and fun, it's okay to bend the rules to allow for it.

When it comes to voices

I like to do voices for NPCs to help get in the head of the character. I prefer to change my voice's timbre and inflection over using accents.

Keith's ideal table

Important aspects of my tables include, focus on narrative, character development and collaborative world-building.

I love it when a player

roleplays with the other players, without prompting. My favorite gaming experiences come from listening to what the PCs discuss with each other.

I think it's a red flag when players...

complain that they sometimes fail before they win. Failure is fun! Tension and problem solving are what I find the most fun in my games. If you want to roll dice to see how quickly you're going to win before moving on to the next encounter to do the same, you might want to find a different table.

I think metagaming...

is not only okay, but important! I believe that if players have knowledge that their PCs don't, the narrative is so much more interesting.
