About Emgee

I'm a professional RPG Facilitator for neurodivergent college students in the Pacific Northwest, and a contract-based Gamemaster for online RPGs. I have over 20 years of experience leading RPGs of all sorts, specializing in D&D5e, Lancer, Star Wars (FFG/Saga/d20), and Avatar: Legends. I prioritize safety, storytelling, and fostering a safe space for everyone to create together in my games. I have worked as a writer and editor for over a decade, done professional voice acting and video editing, and worked as a tournament organizer at local gaming stores. My experience in creative endeavors, virtual environments, and fantasy culture have all led to my role as a professional Gamemaster.

I became a GM because

...I'm a storyteller at heart, and none of my friends wanted to run an RPG themselves. I've been writing and working on creative endeavors my whole life, and I love providing a space where adults can embrace creativity, collaboration, and play. Community and imagination are extremely important!

I got started GMing...

...with a custom-made Star Wars system because I didn't know there was an official one! I was in love with Star Wars and wanted to play pretend with my friends, so we used LEGO figures, made up numbers, and used silly names from soda labels to make characters.

My favorite system of all Time is

Lancer RPG. I was already a fan of Tom Parkinson-Morgan from Kill Six Billion Demons and addicted to 'mechs from Battletech. I love the tactical combat mode of the game, but the real joy is the free-form role-playing in the Lancer setting. Who doesn't want fully-automated luxury gay space communism?

How Emgee runs games

I've run games of all types, from one-shots to multi-year epics, from grueling tactical Lancer missions to player-driven Avatar: Legends explorations, and from online FoundryVTT adventures with animations, automations, and sound effects to purely Theater of the Mind journeys with nary a dice roll. I prefer to err on the side of Roleplay over Crunch, but I believe that rules are essential for equity and trust between players and the GM. As a Game Master, I prioritize player safety, player agency, and player creativity. I not only provide and use roleplaying safety tools like the X-Card, but I foster an environment where players feel connected to the story they are experiencing, have the ability to contribute to the creative endeavor, and earnestly trust that they can lose themselves in the immersion without worry.

I deal with rules issues by...

...using the system's Rules as Written as a starting point. I am open to correction mid-game, but if it derails the gameplay, I prefer to arbitrate in the moment and resolve the issue after the session. Any house rules or changes will be discussed clearly beforehand and agreed upon together.

Rules are...

...there to make sure the game is fair for everyone. They support the story, not limit it. Roleplaying and telling a story together are the priorities in my games. If players wish to use rules to prevent others from enjoying the narrative, I believe they should consider playing a video game.

Emgee's ideal table

I have several years of experience leading groups made entirely of neurodivergent players, and have been thanked for providing a safe space to take off one's mask. My longest-running players include women, enbies, and transfolk, and I am committed to hosting tables that are welcoming to everyone. My specialty is bringing folks who are completely new—whether to a game system or to RPGs themselves—to the table. I simply love being a guide to new worlds! I encourage my players to eschew traditional 'party roles' and 'balanced composition' in favor of playing roles that sound appealing to them. My job as a GM already includes adapting the adventure to the party's interests, and I find that I can quite easily tailor roleplay scenes and combat encounters to any party makeup. To address the tired trope, I think that a player should play a Cleric if they want to, not because they have to.

I love it when a player

...thinks outside the box! If you have an idea of what you want to happen, I want to help you get there. I'll start by explaining options already within the system's rules, but I'm not opposed to using tools from other RPG systems to help—like Devil's Bargains from Blades in the Dark!

I think it's a red flag when players...

...build a 'Lone Wolf' character that isn't interested in exploring the plot, doesn't contribute to the group's success, or chooses not to participate. There's nothing wrong with playing a Rogue, but the players are here to experience an adventure together—not to brood in an imaginary tavern.

I think min/maxing...

...is fine in most cases, as long as a character's optimization helps the group dynamic and doesn't foster a competitive spirit between players. RPGs are a group endeavor, not a competition. If players need a great example of this type of group-focused min-max, I recommend TreantMonk's 'God Wizard'.
