About Dan Hughes

I’ve been gaming for over 40 years now, starting with my first Hero Quest board game set. Started my TTRPG experiences by Storytelling the now classic World of Darkness settings and quickly fell in behind the DM screen for D&D sessions as well. Over the years I have run dozens of campaigns, many continuing for many years, across many different game settings and systems. From WOD, DnD, Rifts, D20, Shadowrun, Cypher, The Expanse, Star Wars, TMNT, Pathfinder and Starfinder, even did some Warhammer 40K. I have created custom worlds for several different systems, include my own system I have been writing and play testing over the years. I am working with and learning online systems and currently use DnD Beyond, Discord, Roll20, World Anvil, Thieves Guild and of course all the WiKi I can find. I always aim to bring the stories to life with descriptive combat, character story development, lively NPCs (with accents and personality), in-depth storytelling with overlapping themes to make the games as immersive as possible.

Artist, tattooist, writer, illustrator, miniature designer and painter. Reading, drawing and video games take up most of my free time, when I’m able to find some.

How Dan Hughes runs games

I always aim to bring the stories to life with descriptive combat, character story development, lively NPCs (with accents and personality), in-depth storytelling with overlapping themes to make the games as immersive as possible. Character interaction is also important to making a more realistic feel, between players and npc’s as well. Making the games fun for everybody is the most important part to me as a DM. I am usually firm on system rules, but also incorporate homebrew rules to almost every game. But the rule of cool is also something I believe in, the more creative the better.

I prep by

Hoping everyone has a good time… I also do tons of research to bring my games to life. I do on occasion make maps and handouts for my games. It’s not as rewarding for my online players, they’re just sad because they couldn’t touch any of it.

Rules are...

Rule of Cool… And have fun! I usually go with seems the most logical and fair. Most often, I consult with the whole group to get their feedback. I want everyone to feel like their voice is heard, even the quiet ones.

When it comes to voices

I try my best to add as much character and personality with all the characters. I love throwing in accents and interesting yet sometimes weird voices and sound effects. I basically never grew up…

Dan Hughes's ideal table

I try to be pretty easy going with my players, veterans and beginners are both always welcomed. Most of my campaigns can become pretty detailed and continue for extended periods of time. Many have lasted several years of weekly play, focusing on many different aspects in the game. From partying to politics, mayhem to monopolies and everything in between. Balancing combat and roleplay with enough downtime to give the players the opportunity for their characters to flourish and shine. Everyone should be comfortable to be who they want be and play it out the way they want to. But to also be conscious of the others playing with them as well, everybody’s comfort and wellbeing is important. The main thing is to have fun, even when shit gets serious. Oh yeah, I will probably curse and swear a bit, but it’s all in good fun.

I love it when a player

Thinks of something so crazy, and it works! You know they are into the game when a player is thinking outside the box. Using spells in unique ways, or finding a solution to a problem or obstacle that I had not considered. It’s the best!

I think metagaming...

BLASPHEMY!!!

My table is not the place for...

Bullies and rule lawyers, people game to get away from that sort of thing.
