About Aaron

I am an experienced GM for several TTRPGs. I run weekly events at my FLGS for D&D 5.5e and additionally run a bi-weekly Call of Cthulhu session for work buddies. On occasion, when looking for a min-max fill, I will play Pathfinder Society. At a myriad of conventions, you can find me running games, usually for Darrington Press & Daggerheart. My primary focus titles at the moment are D&D, Daggerheart, and Call of Cthulhu.

How Aaron runs games

The approach that I take to games is very much role-play based, and I love to explore collective storytelling with my parties. My belief is that the game is about the players and preserving their ability to tell the story that they want to tell in a way that is fun for everyone. For parties that have a little less to say, I am comfortable creating in the theater of the mind, narrating heavily the events that unfold both in and out of combat. Additionally, I'm happy to shift towards combat heavy adventures, and I often run pre-built modules and one-shots for my FLGS that lean heavily on combat & puzzles. Ultimately, I wholeheartedly have an affinity for a great story, and to me that is what TTRPGs are all about. Sometimes, I'll even fudge a dice roll if it means the party is better off for it. I just really want my players to have a good and memorable experience. I want them all to have the joy and nostalgia that I get just thinking about playing TTRPGs. Where possible, I try to split sessions so that there are heavy role play portions, then cool and interesting combat portions. A middle ground is necessary. TTRPGs without combat are barely a game. TTRPGs without roleplay are basically tactical games with dice. My sessions will have something for everybody.

I once ran a session...

For a group of middle school kids. Their interests were based around getting a story out which they had been wanting to tell for a while. Each player something different. Very little understanding or care for the rules existed amongst the players. What unfolded was chaotic, fun, and rules-lite.

Rules are...

More like guidelines. I will always use the game text as foundation, but will modify things as I see fit to help fit the narrative that my players are trying to craft.

Aaron's ideal table

I am open to all types of players at my table. That extends beyond the play styles of the players. My ideal table only has two clear characteristics: open-mindedness, and collaborative spirit. As long as my players are working towards a set goal together, I'm happy. They can have any number of quirks and side quests as they want. The more the merrier. I'll adapt with the unfolding of the story so that my players can unravel the plots that feel important to them.
