About Samuel McKnight

I'm a husband and father of two who's been playing D&D and other tabletop games since I was twelve years old, and running them for almost as long. I enjoy and have experience with D&D, Pathfinder, and Genesys, and am always expanding my repertoire. I'm also a classically trained actor and voice actor, and I incorporate my training into play where possible to try to bring as much life to my games as possible. I love storytelling and collaboration in many forms and also enjoy a variety of books, movies, and video games that influence my taste and style.

I ran my first game...

For my brother, when I was 12 years old in a fort in the woods on my parent's property. We were using the 5e D&D beta test play materials which we had printed ourselves, and figuring it out as we went along.

My favorite books are

Mostly from the works of Stephen King. I love the Dark Tower series, and The Stand and Salem's lot are also among my favorites. I also enjoy fantasy classics from CS Lewis, Tolkien, Salvatore, and Greenwood.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Acting, I'm a classically trained theatre, film, and voice actor, and I perform at a university and professional level, or taking care of my two kids.

How Samuel McKnight runs games

I try to tailor my games to my players, but in general enjoy high-stakes role play, gritty and dangerous combat, and deep worldbuilding. I work closely with players to help develop characters and stories that feel connected to the world and each other, and see growth over the course of the story. That said I'm more than willing to adjust a style to best fit a group and strive to create an environment where everyone has fun.

Samuel McKnight's ideal table

I like collaborative tables with players of all experience levels who are interested in the story, willing to work with the other players and me, and have concern for the narrative. I don't need experts, just people who are willing to be present for the story.

I love it when a player

Builds a character that feels a part of the world and story. Everyone has more fun if characters feel connected and influenced by what's around them.

I think min/maxing...

Is fun as long as it tells a story. Your character should be a character, not a collection of stats.
