About Obelisk
I have been DMing games for several years now, roughly two or three weekly sessions, some paid some not. I have run starfinder, wanderhome, but primarily DND campaigns which have lasted for years and one of which is still going from its start. I use a variety of software, maps, virtual tabletops etc, to create an immersive experience for my players. My style is somewhat whimsical, I allow players lots of freedom, but always with a strong narrative core. I am a trained actor and storytelling is the heart of my skillset. I prefer story over mechanics, but still work within the rules of the game and enjoy making sure players dont try to go against the spirit of the game. I have run some modules of DND, but these all eventually ended up with homebrew elements, and now I am in the process of worldbuilding a complete homebrew setting for my next campaign. I am partway through an online course in DMing which has given me plenty of tips and skills on making my encounters and storytelling even better.

I got started GMing...
By posting online and finding people flocked to show interest. I ran modules from DND books and made online maps, I did so much work in the first week I was sorted for months afterwards. It made my holidays so much better and got me out of bad places
My favorite books are
I love Lord of the Rings, I love the Hobbit, and I love all things Pratchett. The immense world building makes my imagination fire up, always
How Obelisk runs games
I am all about roleplaying and storytelling. I like to use mechanics to support the story, and cause tension, rather than relying on gameplay to dictate story. I like big dramatic moments contrasted with small, light moments of downtime. Combat is harder than story for me, but I have experience balancing and creating high stakes encounters. My preferred players are those who make decisions based on character motivations rather than metagaming where possible. Highlights of my games include the creation of an "evil avengers" where the party decided to send half beaten villains and small NPCS, to a druid, to be turned good and fight as a team. Eventually they actually showed up and helped the party. In my games you can expect somewhat ridiculous (But always narratively sound) things to happen. I'm passionate about making my players the focus though, I simply find that giving them freedom opens the way for strange and wonderful adventures.

I once ran a session...
Where the party: disguised themselves as goblins, blagged their way into a castle, met the bugbear king, hit him a bunch, then his guards came but they somehow charmed him, they then started a civil war, escaped with the king, then sent him to a druid to be made "good"
Obelisk's ideal table
My ideal table is one of friends and companions who work together to build a world and story that every single player finds compelling and that drives us to change and grow as players and DM.
