About DM Mat

Hello! I'm DM Mat, a game master with over 35 years of experience behind the screen. I started with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and have played through every era up to D&D 5e 2024. Over the decades I’ve run countless stories across many worlds — from grim mysteries to wild planar adventures to hilarious improv-driven chaos. I really enjoy a wide cast of pro DMs, but Chris Perkins and Acquisitions Incorporated stand out to me: energetic, improvisational, character-driven, and always adapted to the tone of the table. Sessions can be serious, heroic, comedic, dark, or a mix — whatever brings out the most fun for the group. I run one-shots, long campaigns, play-by-post games, sandbox explorations, West Marches, and reimagined official modules like Curse of Strahd, Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, Descent into Avernus, Rise of the Runelords, Kingmaker, and Age of Worms. I also love Eberron, Planescape, Faerûn, and fully homebrew worlds. I mostly run games in French or English as suits the current party. In my games, both newcomers and seasoned heroes are equally welcome. I can also run games for your group or a private event — just inquire, we acquire. Above all, my tables are respectful, collaborative, and focused on shared enjoyment. If you love exploration, memorable characters, surprising twists, and a relaxed but immersive atmosphere, I’d be happy to welcome you to the adventure.

My three systems for a desert island would be Dungeon World, Dungeons & Dragons 5e, and Fate. With those three, I can run anything from epic fantasy to wild improvisational storytelling—plenty to stay inspired while waiting for rescue.

My favorite shows and movies include Stranger Things, Lord of the Rings, The Boys, Vox Machina, and Guardians of the Galaxy. I love stories that mix adventure, heart, humor, and a touch of the supernatural.

When I'm not running games I'm...

When I'm not running games, I'm usually playing music, spending time with my family, or traveling. I love exploring new places, discovering new stories, and bringing that inspiration back to the table.

I prep by

I prep by reviewing what happened, what’s likely to follow, and what goals or unfinished threads the characters have. I build scenes and opportunities around their choices so the story grows naturally from the players’ actions.

Rules are...

Rules are tools to help us tell great stories. If a rule gets in the way of fun or creativity, we bend it or use the rule of cool. The goal is the story, not strict enforcement—unless the group agrees a system should be played rules-as-written.

DM Mat's ideal table

My table is friendly, respectful, and story-focused. I value creativity, teamwork, and players who enjoy shaping the world with their choices. The vibe is relaxed but immersive, with humor when it fits and drama when it matters. I welcome players who engage with the story, care about the group’s fun, and enjoy a mix of roleplay, exploration, improvisation, and memorable character moments. If you like collaboration over competition and enjoy discovering surprising twists together, you’ll fit in perfectly at my table.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player surprises me or the group, commits fully to their character, or chooses something sub-optimal because it makes the story richer or more fun for everyone. Those moments of creativity and generosity make the table unforgettable. I also like when they bring cookies to the table!
