About HexNova

Hi, I'm Hex—a longtime GM and former event organizer who's run everything from D&D and Vampire: The Masquerade to Lancer and Storypath Ultra games like Curseborne and Exalted. I’m a highly flexible GM who reads the table’s vibe—whether your group leans into dramatic roleplay, dungeon-crawling and loot, or something in between 🎲. The voice of my players matters most, and making sure you’re genuinely invested is my top priority ❤️. My style leans about 70% roleplay, 30% combat, with a focus on collaborative storytelling, character development, and moments that feel personal and earned. I design puzzles when they fit the narrative—creative and grounded, never based on obscure “moon logic” 🧠. Whether you love emotional character arcs, tense social encounters, or just want a group that listens and builds a story together, I’ve got you. Accents and voices are optional—passion for your character is what really counts 🎭. Outside of running games, I’m diving deeper into the game design space, developing custom content and freelancing as a writer. I also dabble in cosplay and may share my work if you're curious 🧵. If you're looking for a flexible, story-rich campaign where your character truly matters—grab a spot and let’s create something great together. My inspirations and references from mass media include Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn and Stormlight Archive, Joe Abercrombie’s series, and Sarah J. Maas. I also draw from TV shows like The Sandman, Game of Thrones, movies like Star Wars, and more!

I got started GMing...

when there was nobody else to GM and felt that some GMs were a bit too hard on the players or didn't allow creativity and good resolutions on rulings. I want to bring your and mine creativity together and smooth out the friction of rules

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

DnD because of course everyone knows that. Then Daggerheart so we can have something new and here is the real fun choice bring something like Fate Accelerated because this will allow us the time to develop and learn the system with the highest growth potential

My favorite shows/movies are

My fav TV shows right now are things like Sandman, Gen V, Stranger Things, Dune, Foundation Movies would be Dune, Starwars, the Dark Crystal, the DnD movies, Everything Everywhere All at Once

How HexNova runs games

I try to provide my players with flexibility—we all want some sessions where we punch monsters 💥, and then there are moments and characters where you want to go deep into the story. My personal preference is strong roleplay, character building, player choice, and dramatic, engaging storytelling that makes you want to come back for more. Combat, for me, is a way to resolve the stakes set before the players. I try to make tabletop combat more exciting by borrowing mechanics from video games—timed events, dynamic objectives, and so on—rather than just presenting a bag of hit points. Strategic opportunities like “the floor under the dragon is weak” 🐉 or complex setups like runic circles that a mage can activate to weaken or destroy the monster are examples of what I enjoy bringing to the table. Rarely, if ever, will I throw in a monster that's just a hit-point sponge. I want everything we do to be interesting, to draw from player creativity, and more. My preference is for players to tell me what they like, what they want to see—and let us work together on both. I’ll collaborate with you and the group to make it all coherent and make sense. Player feedback is extremely important to me!

I prep by

Writing, gathering maps, looking at player backstories to pull on threads. Watching other roleplay podcasts for inspiration and to see how others do things

My favorite trope is...

an evil witch that is actually a good person. I love a self aware villain while the heroes don't even understand the issues with the choices they made, and a character makes them see things from a different perspective!

Rules are...

are to bring a framework to the game and should not be used to destroy fun and excitement for the player or the group.

HexNova's ideal table

An ideal table is a place where everyone is engaged and excited to jump in—a space where players talk to each other all week about their characters and what might happen next. It’s a table where we collaborate, build on each other’s characters and the story—a place where you can relax, have an awesome time, make new friends, and just enjoy the experience together! 🎉

I love it when a player

Brings a cool backstory and character, something that you can work with in the long run and is not just a flash character for a session unless it's a one shot. Don't get me wrong, I love a flashy character haha, just a preference.

I think it's a red flag when players...

are not respecting each other, or ignoring and trying to overpower others in roleplay or the narrative. We should share the spotlight and learn to bring each other up, I am glad that games like Daggerheart try to bring that as a core of their game.

I think metagaming...

is complicated, sometimes it makes sense and at other times it can be frustrating when it brings everything into a grinding halt. It's a hard thing really we are trying to tell stories of the character's decisions, often times snap choices. Meanwhile we are players at the table as well
