About Martyn

Hi, I’m Martyn. I have been a Game Master for three years, running Dungeons & Dragons. During that time, I have completed two full Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, each lasting approximately 18 months. Running these long-term adventures has taught me how to maintain momentum, develop characters over time, remember important choices, and bring a campaign to a satisfying conclusion. I am passionate about worldbuilding and have created my own detailed fantasy setting, Orella. It is a living world filled with distinctive nations, cultures, factions, religions, conflicts, and mysteries. I encourage players to build characters who genuinely belong within the setting, and I enjoy working collaboratively with them to connect their backstories, ambitions, relationships, and personal struggles to the wider campaign. Away from the gaming table, I work in learning and development and have many years of experience supporting, teaching, and encouraging others. I play as well as GM-ing and I write and I look after my beautiful doggo Olive.

How Martyn runs games

My style as a Game Master is rooted in freedom, discovery, and meaningful player choice. I run Dungeons & Dragons as a sandbox, giving the players space to decide where they go, which threats they confront, whom they trust, and what kind of story they want to create. I will prepare locations, characters, conflicts, mysteries, and opportunities, but I do not expect the party to follow a predetermined route. The world may present urgent problems, but the players decide which matters become their priorities. Player agency is paramount at my table. Choices will have genuine consequences, whether those choices lead to triumph, disaster, unexpected alliances, or entirely new adventures. I want players to feel that their actions can change Orella rather than simply reveal a story that has already been written. Factions will respond to their reputation, enemies will adapt, allies will remember their help, and neglected dangers may continue to develop. Failure will rarely mean that the adventure simply stops; instead, it will alter the situation and create new challenges. Backstories are not decorative additions. I will use them to create meaningful encounters, difficult decisions, recurring NPCs, and opportunities for character growth. However, I do not expect every character to arrive with pages of history. A strong motivation, a few important relationships, and some unanswered questions are often enough.

I prep by

writing and communicating with my players

My games focus on...

Players and their story. I will create stories in my world based on character backstory. But dont worry if you are not the type to write a backstory I will hook you with my own adventure, from mysteries to defeating gods.

When it comes to voices

I struggle to do them but i always try.

Martyn's ideal table

My table is communicative, we discuss how to progress and i encourage open discussions to enable people are happy. I am a rule of cool DM and I do enjoy giving players scenarios and also freedom to create and innovate.
