About Calvin

Born and raised in Cape Town, I am a professional Dungeon Master dedicated to the art of collaborative, high-stakes storytelling. My life has been a long journey from a young adventurer in the Forgotten Realms to a professional creator who believes that D&D is the ultimate form of community therapy. By trade, I am a graphic designer and illustrator. I bring this professional eye to the virtual tabletop, treating every session not just as a game, but as an immersive production. I am a lifelong storyteller who believes that the "Transmutation Rule"—Never say "No"—say "Yes, and here are the consequences"—is the key to unlocking a campaign that stays with you long after the session ends. I am deeply committed to a trauma-informed, inclusive table. I prioritise community over anonymity, fostering a space where 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and neurodivergent adventurers can find a home. When you join my table, you aren't just a player—you are a contributor to a living, breathing world. What My Players Say “I was beyond spoiled having Calvin as a DM. His infectious personality, encyclopedia of NPC voices, and deep care for the game and his players is evident in every session.” “Every arc and cliffhanger is an emotional rollercoaster; Calvin is the definition of collaborative and is very diligent in making sure players feel safe.” “A needlepoint balance of everything—collaborative, creative, and permissive.”

How Calvin runs games

At my table, we treat pre-written modules as skeletons and your character’s history, trauma, and motivations as the "living muscle" that defines the story. Here is the framework I use to run our adventures: The "Boo" Approach to Gameplay: A "Dollop of Everything": Sessions are meticulously balanced between roleplay-heavy social encounters, environmental exploration, and high-stakes, tactical combat. Every roll matters, and I reward creative engagement with the mechanics. Visual & Auditory Craft: As a visual artist, I don’t just narrate; I build the world. Expect custom maps, thematic visual handouts, and a range of distinct NPC voices that turn every encounter into an immersive cinematic moment. The Journal Economy: I gamify your creative effort. Whether you write journal entries, draw doodles, or send letters to NPCs, I reward your world-building with Bhaal Tokens—a mechanical tool that grants you a re-roll when the dice turn against you. Surgical Integration: Your backstory isn't flavor text—it is the plot. I map your character's goals directly into the game world, ensuring you aren't just visiting the story; you are the driving force behind it. Rules as Guidelines: Mechanics exist to serve the story, not hinder it. I am flexible, adapting rules on the fly to reward "cool" and logical narrative outcomes. The "Boo" Discord Ecosystem (Level 3 Hub): The game doesn't end when the session does. Our Discord is a 24/7 engine for player connection: Play-by-Post: Deepen your character's journey during the week with optional text-based roleplay, downtime activities, and character bonding. Community Connection: Mingle across campaigns, share your favourite local foods from around the globe, and participate in a library of custom, player-voted emojis. Personalised Campaign Spaces: Each campaign has its own dedicated lore and loot-tracking channels, ensuring our ongoing saga is always organised and accessible.

I deal with rules issues by...

When rules issues crop up, I believe in collaboration. If my ruling is wrong, I'll admit it; players often correct me, leading to a quick discussion. I generally rule for "cool" moments, always ensuring it benefits the story and fun for everyone.

My games focus on...

My games focus on collaborative storytelling, impactful player choices, rich character development, and immersive world exploration. Expect a dynamic blend of roleplay, combat, and unexpected twists, all within a safe and fun environment where your creativity truly shines!

When it comes to voices

When it comes to voices, I love to flex my range! I quickly shift from a homicidal goblin (grunts, squawks, chaotic laughs) to a refined noblewoman with a chip on her shoulder. My players love these distinct transformations; I focus on making each voice memorable to immerse you in the story.

Calvin's ideal table

Who Fits Well Here? My ideal player is a creative collaborator who values the journey as much as the destination. You don't need to be a professional actor or a master of rules—you just need to bring curiosity and a "Yes, and..." spirit. Whether you are a "Novelist" who loves writing deep backstories or a "Sightseer" who enjoys exploring the world, you will find your place here. I thrive when players: Engage with the Lore: You enjoy asking "what if" and digging into the world-building. Support the Table: You celebrate other players' "hero moments" as much as your own. Embrace the Chaos: You understand that failure can be just as fun as success, and you’re ready to roll with the punches when a plan goes sideways. The "Boo" Vibe: Community Over Anonymity This isn't a "hire-a-DM" service where you log on, play, and disconnect. My tables are built for people who want to be part of a genuine, long-term adventuring community. A Living Social Hub: Our Level 3 Discord is where the story lives between sessions. From "pet corners" and "favourite local foods" channels to custom emojis voted on by the community, we’ve built a space that celebrates the people behind the characters. Always-On Narrative: Through our Play-by-Post channels, the campaign world stays active between our live sessions. Whether you want to roleplay a campfire conversation, handle downtime crafting, or just share a campaign meme, your character’s story grows every single day. Connected Adventures: Because I run multiple campaigns, my server acts as a cross-table guildhall. You’ll have the opportunity to share your campaign highlights with adventurers from my other tables, making the "Boo-verse" feel like a truly massive, shared experience. What to expect from your fellow adventurers: You’ll be playing with a group that prioritises psychological safety, inclusivity, and mutual respect. We take the game seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously—expect plenty of humour, table-talk, and support, whether we’re in the depths of a gritty combat or a light-hearted RP moment.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

If you're into collaborative storytelling, personal character growth, creative problem-solving, and a supportive community, you're going to love my table!

I love it when a player

I love it when a player embraces their character's journey, engages with the lore, delves into the unknown by asking "what if", and collaborates to tell an unforgettable story, bringing energy and creativity to every session.

I think metagaming...

I think Meta Gaming is using out-of-character knowledge to influence in-character decisions, which can sometimes detract from the narrative immersion. However, I believe there's a spectrum to it, and some forms, like strategic discussion, can actually enhance the game for the group!
