About Beto

Hi, my name is Beto and I'm your new favorite game master, probably. I've been runnining games for 12 years and I'm still learning and growing from each session that I sit down to play! I have two goals at the table, everyone has fun and everyone contributes to that fun. It's my understanding that the players at the table and their choices and expression are the source of all of the wonderful memories and stories that come from these games. Regardless of the system, the adventure, or the resources, the players and their fun are always the highest priority at my tables.

How Beto runs games

My largest focus during games is allowing the narrative to move forward through the choices of the players. To achieve this, I build encounters (RP and Combat) based around the mechanical coolness of each character. Every system allows players to push stories forward in unique ways. My goal is always to find how the character that's been built operates in a system and give them every chance to shine based on that. Players have a reason for playing a specific game and a reason for play specific characters in those games. I like to work together to find those reasons and put on one great game for everyone!

I deal with rules issues by...

Deciding in the moment, erring on the side of cool, and researching the rule in the post-game. Usually there is a text discussion regarding the rule afterwards, on the discord.

My favorite trope is...

Jumping the Shark, I bring my own water skis.

My games focus on...

Coolness! Fun! Story's moving forward and learning from the choices that were made...even if the lessons are best left in the realm of the table.

Beto's ideal table

The players and GM are a group of people engaging in the ancient art of storytelling. A practice that is fundamental to our development as people. I approach it with a sense of joy, curiosity, and wonder. And I have a deep respect for anyone's willingness to share some part of themselves with the group. My tables are open to any and all expression that is honest, fair, and allows room for growth. Players at my table can expect to be treated with respect and understanding. Players at my table can expect to be heard and listened to when they have strong feelings about the game. And what is most important, players at my table can expect to have fun, feel comfortable, and be themselves - or whoever they choose to be for that session.

I love it when a player

Says exactly what they want from a game or session or rules system! It's easy to just guess that we're all on the same page but being honest and fair about expectations and expressing them clearly can make every one feel more engaged at the table.

I think min/maxing...

Exists! But if you aren't willing to tell a story with the choices on your characters sheet, you may not get everything you are looking for at my tables. Not many of my combats reward this style of play that are based on the mechanical efficiency of a character sheet.

My table is not the place for...

Non-supportive rhetoric. We are playing a game and regardless of the perspective on that game, there are exactly zero instances that call for rhetoric that is harmful, hateful, disrespectful, or insulting to other players.
