About Barbazán

I am a professional Dungeon Master, secondary school teacher, and amateur actor based in Wellington. My approach to Dungeons & Dragons is built on three pillars: Organisation, Immersion, and Balance. I combine my background in Education and Sociology to create grounded, realistic worlds, while drawing on my experience in theatre and film to bring characters and moments to life. What to Expect at the Table: The "Show": I put energy into the performance. I want you to sit back and feel immersed in a cinematic experience. No Pressure: While I love doing voices and acting out scenes, you don't have to. You can describe your actions in the third person or act them out—whatever makes you comfortable. A Unique Flavour: As a Spanish native, I bring a distinct "Old World" tone to the fantasy genre. Languages: English Spanish (Full immersion campaigns available)

I became a GM because

When I was a teenager, my cousin ran a Dragon Strike game one night, and it was epic. I noticed how incredible my cousin was at creating stories. Since then, I have wanted to do the same, so I ran role-playing games for friends and realised that I enjoy being the DM more than being a player.

I got started GMing...

When I was 16, in my house's garage with a friend, we first played Dragon Strike and Warhammer Quest. Then we gathered several friends, borrowed my brother's manuals and played a D&D campaign for roughly three years. I started with Advanced D&D, then moved to third, and finally to 3.5.

My favorite shows/movies are

Lord of the Rings Conan the Barbarian Van Helsing Vampire Hunter D The Vision of Escaflowne Record of Lodoss War Attack on Titans DragonHeart King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Stardust The Princess Bride Game of Thrones Troy TheAIGuy | Artificial Chronicles | D&D Campaign 1 (Youtube)

How Barbazán runs games

My Style: "The Perfect Balance" I don't believe a session should be just talking or just fighting. My goal is a perfect rhythm in every session. Atmosphere: I use my amateur acting background to give NPCs unique voices and personalities, and I set the scene with vivid descriptions. Voices: Rather than creating a plethora of voices for different characters, I try to interpret each NPC as differentiated as possible. Besides, my thing is more in sound effects. Action: I love tactical combat. My encounters tend to be challenging, descriptive and designed to make you use your character's capabilities. Pacing: As a teacher, I know how to read a room. I ensure the spotlight moves between players and keep the story moving.

I deal with rules issues by...

I prioritise game flow above all else. To keep the action moving, my in-game ruling is final. We can discuss the specific rules or disputes after the session. I am always happy to admit mistakes and adjust for the future, but I will not pause the game to debate.

My games focus on...

Epic, combat-heavy adventures in a custom homebrew world. I weave your backstory into the lore, balancing fighting with puzzles and exploration. Roleplay is encouraged but optional. Play smart: recklessness is deadly.

When it comes to voices

I bring combat to life with vocal sound effects and visceral noises. For villains and monsters, I use accents and act in the first person to heighten immersion. No pressure for you to do accents, but I always encourage and enjoy seeing players get into character.

Barbazán's ideal table

I particularly enjoy running games for beginners and intermediate players who are eager to explore and learn. Veterans are also welcome, provided they bring a humble, collaborative spirit rather than a "rules lawyer" attitude. The soul of my table is cooperation—we win together and tell the story together. My ideal session has a natural rhythm. We can laugh, joke, and relax during funny scenes, but we switch gears to full immersion when the stakes are high. I value players who can read the room and balance these two moods, as keeping high-intensity focus for 4 hours straight isn't sustainable for anyone! Playstyle & Etiquette Immersion: I reward staying in character. I prefer to minimise metagaming, but you are always welcome to drop a character to ask questions or clarify doubts. Safety & Respect: Zero tolerance for bullying or mistreatment. We use the X-Card to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable. Punctuality: I am online 30-45 minutes early to review everything one more time. We start exactly on time. If you are late, you can slip in when you arrive, but please respect the schedule (missed sessions are non-refundable).

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Lord of the Rings and Conan the Barbarian

I love it when a player

roleplays with their companions and get so immersed along with them so deeply that sometimes it takes a long time to cut in.

I think metagaming...

kills the mood when overused. The lesser, the better. Every player, including the DM, enjoys the most when everyone stays in character, the game comes to life, and the experience is unique.
