About Blake

Hiya! I'm Blake and I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 5e came out in 2014. I have been both a player and a DM since then and I currently DM a few campaigns for my home group and online. I never use AI in any of my games, everything comes directly from my own head. If any of my games intrigue you, if you want your story to be remembered for years to come, and if you have the itch to play and need to scratch it, I welcome you to join me and make memories together!

I became a GM because

I wanted my friends to experience the same joy and excitement I had when I first started playing. I came to find out later I love telling stories collaboratively and that became another reason why I started.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Mork Borg (instant replayability) Shadowdark (D&D 5e without the fluff) Savage Sisters (compact and really fun storytelling)

My favorite books are

The Shades of Magic series by V. E. Schwab The Monsters Know What They're Doing: Combat Tactics for Dungeon Masters by Keith Ammann Nimona by ND Stevenson

How Blake runs games

I am a lover of lore, but I'm a lover of fun as well. If there is something that you wish to introduce to the canon world, I will integrate it seamlessly and tirelessly to make the world feel more alive. I believe TTRPGs are an effort in collaborative storytelling, where everyone has a story to tell and place they belong. I keep combat fair, but challenging and interesting. Fights will never be handed over easily, but you will ultimately be the heroes in your own story. Exploration may come up now and again, depending on the context within the campaign it may be an entire session of the campaign or a small encounter. I try to keep a fair balance of the three pillars of play, but there will be times when a session is more roleplay heavy than the previous, or there are more combat encounters in one session than another. I love running games for players of all skill levels as we all start from the same square: with a burning desire to play the game.

I prep by

Taking it all in segments throughout my week. One day I'll read up on relevant monster lore and tactics. Another day I'll reread character backstories. I try to put double the time into prep that I would in running the session (i.e. 8 hours of prep over the week leading up to a 4 hour session).

My favorite trope is...

A character who believes they are past redemption but find it anyway.

When it comes to voices

I aspire to voice act one day, so I channel that into the character voices I use. I try to give each character their own voice to make them distinct.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Deep narrative exploration, consequences for your actions, and dynamic combat encounters

I love it when a player

Shows excitement for their character, even outside of the game. Whether that's making music playlists, drawing character sketches, or even making costumes for their character.

I think min/maxing...

Isn't as big of a deal as it is made out to be. As long as everyone is on the same page with creating their characters in a similar fashion, then it's okay. The problems arise when one player is a min/maxer without consulting the other players.
