About the adventure

A nostalgic wizard has tasked you with locating the apple pie recipe of his childhood dreams, located in his long-abandoned hometown... Grandma's apple pie (created by Jennifer Adcock, with some revisions) is a one-shot (a single self-contained session) that is a great introduction to the mechanics of DnD including social interaction, combat, puzzle solving and investigation. This is a good session for beginners, as well as for anyone looking to practice english speaking skills with a native speaker. This one-shot is a light hearted adventure, with occasionally some sombre undertones, that is approriate for all ages.

About me

My name is Magali (Ma-ga-lee), and I'm a big fan of immersive TTRPGs that allow for a lot of collaborative fun in a very sandbox style. I also run a lot of DnD games designed for non-native speakers looking to practice their English speaking skills in a relaxed environment, providing videos on how to play as well as vocab lists for sessions. I've always enjoyed storytelling and theatre, (not to mention being a huge fantasy nerd) and DnD has been a great way to continue both these passions. I would say most of my games have a fairly lighthearted, studio ghibli-esque approach to fantasy, though I do sometimes run games which focus on heavier topics.

Character creation

Creating your character

Please create a level 3 character in DnD Beyond, there are videos on how to make a character here (I recommend the beginner video for anyone new to the game): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DRhk4KsEhixwyDff_7L4RqBJI7q0v3NM?usp=drive_link For anyone creating a more advanced character, please use standard array and feel free to use any class or subclass (but no homebrew for this session).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account (communication/social platform), DnD Beyond account and Above VTT application. All of these are free to create. You can join the discord server here: https://discord.gg/jshM3EPJM And join the campaign here using this link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/campaigns/join/76515741339725622 You can see more about joining campaigns (and downloading Above VTT) in the videos here, I also recommend watching the video on : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DRhk4KsEhixwyDff_7L4RqBJI7q0v3NM?usp=sharing

What Magali brings to the table

As a GM I love using voices for different characters, preparing background ambient music for different scenes, and also presenting problems that can be solved in a variety of different ways - allowing for player creativity. This session will be fairly laid back, with room for plenty of questions if you want anything clarified, whether it's rule-based or defining vocabulary.

Homebrew rules

DnD 5e 2025 rules, no homebrew for this one (I do have a few but, for an introductory one-shot, I don't want to put too much on anyone's plate!).

Safety

How Magali creates a safe table

I use X-cards (you can make the sign of an X, type one in chat or say X-card out loud to halt gameplay, discuss anything that is making you uncomfortable in the session and gameplay will only resume once accommodations have been made.) As well as lines and veils (lines refers to content that will not be present in gameplay, veils refers to anything that is mentioned but not directly described). Lines for this session: Explicit language, overly graphic content, sexual references (this is for all ages). Veils for this session: Civilian deaths (you will pass through an abandoned village that was attacked many years ago), illness, violence (not graphic but there will be combat, and blood/ battle damage on maps).
