About the adventure

Welcome, you friendly fiends! This is the perfect introduction for new players to the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Whether you've been a part of a few once-off games or if you've never even picked up dice before, this is the perfect introductory setting to get your feet wet enough to confidently jump into any follow-up session or campaign! With a FREE introductory session (known as a session 0) and your first FOUR (4) sessions absolutely FREE OF CHARGE, I hope to give you the chance to try out the hobby enough to the point where you can decide if you're wanting to keep playing and start playing. Even if you aren't new to D&D, the discount still applies! The Session 0 is used to help build your character on DNDBeyond (no purchases required), to help write a simple yet compelling backstory for that character, and to take moment to establish the world and set expectations, I will be giving you all the tools needed to create an engaging character perfect for this campaign. Lost Mine of Phandelver is an official introduction adventure created by Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons and Dragons, that many long-time players experienced as their introduction to the game. It features a classic, high-fantasy world akin to Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia and boasts a wonderful mix of combat and roleplaying opportunities. If you are unsure of joining a game that might be too complex, there is no need to worry. I am more than happy to take my time to ensure you're not only enjoying the game as we play, but also learning the rules and mechanics as we go. As complex as it may seem, once you get the hang of it, it is incredibly intuitive and can be incredibly fun playing around with different mechanics and classes to create a character that truly fits in with what you want. This is a safe and comfortable space for all kinds of players, and I hope to introduce you to one of the greatest hobbies the world has ever seen. Every resource needed will be provided, no purchases are required. I promise, if you enjoy playing... there is nothing else quite like it.

About me

Hi there, my friendly storytelling fiends. I'm Brett, a Dungeon Master who loves the moment when a story all comes together and an entire table stares at one another in disbelief. After several years playing Dungeons and Dragons as both a player and DM, and having fallen out of love with filmmaking because of the toxic industry, my bones crave the chance to tell meaningful and emotionally gratifying stories with others. I would love to play with you and see exactly what kind of experience we can build together. There is nothing quite like playing an immersive TTRPG, and I'd love to be someone to introduce you or give you a space to express yourself in one of the most unique and interactive storytelling mediums ever crafted.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will be done together, with myself in a free introductory session, known as a session 0. I will take this time to explore all necessary rules, as well as to help you build the character in their entirety on DNDBeyond - the official Dungeons and Dragons website without any purchases requires. All resources needed will be given to you. You will be starting at Level 1 and the Campaign will take you all the way through to Level 5. By the time the campaign has ended, you will feel confident enough to build your own characters and character sheets, but in the meantime I will help guide you through every aspect.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

There are two things required. First is a Discord Account. Ensure that you have a working discord account with reliable internet, headphones and a good microphone so that everyone can be focused on the game and technical issues on call are minimized. Second, is a DNDBeyond account. Upon creation of a DNDBeyond account, you will be invited into a Campaign on the website and upon joining this campaign you will be given all the necessary resources needed to build your character. This will be done with myself in the introductory Session 0.

What Brett brings to the table

My focus as a Dungeon Master is creating an engaging and entertaining story with my players. Everything else, in my opinion, is done to supplement whatever kind of story we are hoping to tell. With the Lost Mine of Phandelver, this is full of classic fantasy and as such my approach is going to make the group feel grounded and excited about the world they find themselves in. There will be moments of funny hijinks and there will be serious moments of suspense. With this type of Campaign, I am striving for balance between the two to get you as close to the full scope of what a Campaign can feel like. I will do fun voices and use ambient music while at the same time utilizing all of the mechanics to my advantage to give you engaging and unique combat experiences that are both tough but also easy to learn with. I will follow the rules to ensure that everyone learns them, but at the same time I will bend the rules to show you how common it can be and how at the end of the day, as I said, everything is done to support the story moving forward, including bending or breaking rules.

Safety

How Brett creates a safe table

In order to have a safe and universally entertaining adventure, the use of X,N and O 'cards' are going to be used. If at any time something makes you uncomfortable, you can send me a private message with the indication and the scene will be promptly skipped. Also in Session 0, any potentially troublesome topics will be brought up and discussed. Hard lines and Veils will be established in this session 0, so that I as the Dungeon Master will know exactly when and what to do when those topics are directly or indirectly brought up. Luckily, Lost Mine of Phandelver has very little possible problematic themes or moments due to it's introductory nature, so I wouldn't be too worried about having too many problematic pieces of content as we play along.
