About the adventure

"Come to the Carnival, where the fun never ends! A place of surprises, new faces and friends! But best keep your wits, should evil abscond And lead you astray, to the Feywild Beyond..." Every eight years, the Witchlight Carnival magically appears in your world. For a single night, the common folk can forget their troubles, indulge in whimsy and delight, and have a magical, fun time! All it costs is a ticket entry. But for you, the Carnival holds a distant, yet unpleasant memory. As a child, you snuck in past the ticket booth, to have a secret outing at the Carnival. Though your memory of that night is hazy, you do recall that you lost something very precious! Worse, when you brought this up to the Carnival owners, they simply shrugged and turned you away. Now, over sixteen years later, you stand at the gate of that same Carnival. Will you get back that which you lost? Or will you, too, find yourself lost beyond the Witchlight? This game uses the the Play-by-Post format. Play-by-Post has been around for almost as long as D&D has, and is best suited to those of us who just do not have the time to play a full session every week. With Play-by-Post, you play to your schedule in a relaxed, fun and safe online environment.

About me

Hi! I'm Dave, an actor and avid D&D player from Bonnie Scotland. I've been playing 5e for 5 years now, and while I've grown very fond of the system, I've dipped my toe in other games such as Call of Cthulhu, Daggerheart and Kids on Bikes! I generally focus on narrative over mechanical crunch, but my top priority at any table is the enjoyment and engagement of the players. The story can't be told without you or the dice - are you ready to begin your next chapter?

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be using the 2024 rules for character creation. - Any ancestry/class/background in the 2024 Player's Handbook, or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, is acceptable. Please consult me first before choosing any external or third-party material. - We will be starting at Level 1, using the Equipment option. For plot reasons, you will not be starting with a lot of gold! - Stats will be generated with Point Buy.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need: 1. a Discord account, 2. a D&DBeyond account (free), and 3. an Owlbear Rodeo account (free). I will be sharing any material I have via DDB, so you do not need to have those sources purchased.

What Dave brings to the table

I will be using Discord as the forum for our game (text only, so no need for a camera or microphone!) I will also be using Owlbear Rodeo for battle maps, and D&DBeyond for characters. I love roleplaying and combat, though I generally favour the former. In this module, you are encouraged to try to avoid combat, and with me there is almost always a noncombative option. I invite my players to try anything they like to avoid unnecessary fighting - that is, if they *want* to avoid fighting... My favourite part in any game begins when a player throws caution to the wind and says, "I want to try something crazy," because you know you're in for a treat! I embrace the Rule of Cool whenever possible, especially in character-driven moments, to encourage players to push the boat out and give it a shot. Just hope that the dice are in your favour too!
I aim to post 1-2 times per day to advance the story, while also being around to answer any queries players may have. Play-by-post is a much slower format than face-to-face games, and I want to remedy this as best I can.

Homebrew rules

- Potions can be consumed as either an Action or Bonus Action. If you consume a healing potion as an Action, you regain the maximum amount of Hit Points (no roll required.)

Safety

How Dave creates a safe table

I will be providing a RPG Safety Tools checklist of themes for players to fill out anonymously. As your Dungeon Master, it is my duty and responsibility to ensure everyone has the best time possible in a safe environment. Communication and trust are key - if there is anything that is making you uncomfortable in the game, I will do my best to fix and resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
