When the pandemic hit, Jay ran a yearlong online Avernus campaign for a bunch of us at work. I met fat friends there, and Jay’s insanely personal, thoughtful, and immersive DM’ing made it a profound and very entertaining experience. Four years later, one of the friends I made playing that campaign asked me to officiate their wedding, and we told everyone there we met exploring the first circle of hell with Jay. You could not ask for a better DM, nor one who better understands the power of games to bring people together.

I've had the privilege of having played in multiple games run by Jay. For him, it's not just a game, it's an experience, and he makes sure everyone is having the best experience possible. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone feels like they are part of the game and engaged. There is never a main character in his games, you are all the main character. As stated in another comment, and I will echo the sentiment, his background in theater and voice work gives him the experience of bringing NPCs and Villains to life, and his story telling ability is top notch. The man loves the game and it shows.

As a beginner/fairly new player he made it really easy for me to feel just as bad ass as my other party members. I had a super fun time as felt just as cool as seasoned players. Great story telling and combat encounters. Our party had a fantastic time and Jay was wonderful!

If I won the lottery Jay would be on permanent retainer. The game he ran had 4 PCs with TTRPG experience ranging from decades to a near first timer, but play was smooth and fulfilling for everyone. I'm very excited to be able to play with Jay in the future. Can't say enough about his charisma bringing life to the NPCs, Jay's technical skills got us all set up remotely with ease, including art and music to help set the scenes. Lastly, Jay always seemed as excited to play with us as we were with him.

I have had the privilege to play in a number of Jay’s games and every time it’s exciting. He sets a standard that is approachable for new players while still giving veterans more than they could ask for. He’s creative and quick with improv. And his voices/accents bring a wonderful layer of immersion to the table. It makes everyone want to put more into their characters.

I have played in multiple campaigns of Jay's as well as DM'd alongside him, and he is among the most talented DMs out there. He cares deeply about player agency and he is extremely adept at creating inhabitable and immersive worlds. I have seen his games move people to tears and laughter in a single session. He also brings deep experience and knowledge of the game itself so you know you're getting the real deal. If you invest your time and energy in a game of Jay's you will be rewarded tenfold.

Character creation
Creating your character

First and foremost: I will be with you every step of the way in character creation. Even if it's your first character or your 1,000th, I'll be available to answer any and all questions/concerns! We will meet for a free 1 on 1 session to create your character, likely lasting 30 min to 1 hour. During that session, we will build your character mechanically and construct a brief backstory. Our first scheduled session will be a free Session Zero to finalize some connections between your characters that should last 1 to 2 hours. Besides character connections, I'll give you some lore to provide context for the world your characters live in and where they're headed! The mechanical details: - We will utilize D&D Beyond to create your characters - Stats are Standard Array - We'll utilize D&D 2024 content for character creation. This basically means Players Handbook only, but I'll be flexible if you have a character idea/need that works - We're starting at level 1, so starting equipment will be standard as in the Player's Handbook

The current party

*** You are part of a group of friends who have recently decided their lives in the largest city in all of Eberron isn't turning out like they'd hoped. You all decide to put your specialized training to use, and pursue a life of an adventurer. Then, as if the Sovereign Host heard your call, you see it: A notice on a job board outside of a pub about a boom town called Quickstone on the border of Breland (brAY-lind) and Droaam (drO-am). The notice calls for adventurers with "a strong arm and loyal heart" to seek their fortunes on deputized missions. The notice even cites the missions as "entry level". Perfect. You all use your last coin to buy a lightning rail ticket to Quickstone. The initial leg of the train ride is long, and the train is packed with passengers. But once you make your transfer to a direct, new line to Quickstone, the digs become a bit more....rural. *** And that is literally where the game will begin! I'll meet with you individually to construct your character. Before then, let the previous introduction & the following facts stew in your creative mind: - Your party is made up of long standing friends, so make sure to think about a character that would have a group of long standing friends that vary in species. - Your character grew up in a MASSIVE metropolis called Sharn, City of Towers, in Breland. It's called the City of Towers because of the various levels of floating towers that make up the city. There is a very clear caste system separating the rich, from the kind of rich, from the middle class, from the lower middle class, from the poor, and from the destitute. Your character can be from an level of this society, as long as there is room for them to have friends from any level of society as well. - Eberron's lore is vastly different than Tolkien or even standard D&D. The standard species that exists in every day Eberron games is more diverse. As well as your standard species for D&D games (humans, dwarves, elves, etc.), goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, orcs, and even gnolls can be found in some major cities. - Eberron has 3 species & 1 class that are unique to the world: Warforged, Changeling, and Shifters are the species, and Artificer is the class. Feel free to read about them in the character creator, and/or I can explain more about them when we meet 1:1. - Every class is awesome and contributes in their own way, and it's important you're pleased with your character. So, while I can certainly tell you the other member's classes if you're concerned about party balance, it will not be necessary to be an effective party. We'll have fun no matter your party construction.

What Jay brings to the table

I love to RP as NPC's with your characters. Sometimes, if you RP well enough, you might just get some info for free or get advantage on a roll. But even if you aren't as proficient with role playing, you will feel engaged in the game all the same, and still benefit from your character's knowledge and abilities. I portray NPC's in character. Meaning I utilize character voices & sound effects & other performance techniques. This does not mean you have to! You can come to the table with whatever portrayal of your character you would like. I also utilize custom playlists to create mood and ambiance for the game and it's environments. These tracks will vary from epic orchestral tracks, to environment sound effects, to modern rock. I like to approach my music like A Knights Tale: eclectic and mood appropriate. We will go by rules as written (RAW) for D&D 2024. My goal is to make sure the players feel like they're playing the same rules system as the DM. I won't surprise you with rule inconsistencies, and I am always open to corrections! I view D&D and any Role Playing Game as collaborative story telling. I am not your adversary, but rather "Head Story Teller". My job is to engage with & complicate your character's lives to create a more riveting story. Ultimately though, there is no story without your characters. Try to represent your characters truthfully and with purpose, I'll complicate their lives, and together we'll create a legend worth remembering for all time.

Safety
How Jay creates a safe table

Summarized Content Warning: My games would be rated R by the Motion Picture Assoc. for language, violence, and drugs. Table Top Role Playing Games are supposed to be safe spaces for character exploration & creating new lore between friends. Trust & safety are of the utmost importance to me. Prior to Session Zero, I will ask each player to inform me of any triggers and their own personal Lines & Veils. Every player will receive a document detailing my Lines & Veils, and I will go over that document at Session Zero to reiterate my zero tolerance policy on those issues. My experiences with folks across the spectrums of sexuality, gender, disability (physical & mental), etc. has shown me that it is more than possible to play a successful game that tells an epic story without compromising someone's safety and respecting their individuality. My table is a safe table with a seat for everyone.
