About the adventure
The Dragons Are Watching. What Will You Do? The moons of Eberron hang fractured in the sky. Rifts flicker in the fabric of reality. Old powers long thought dormant stir beneath the mountains, in the shadows of forgotten cities, and high above the world in spires no mortal has touched in millennia. Dragons, ancient and aloof, have turned their gaze back to the mortal world—not to rule, but to act. And for reasons you don’t yet understand… they care about you. Welcome to a high-level Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2024) campaign set in Eberron, a world of magic-fueled innovation, shattered empires, and ancient secrets. This is a land of lightning rail trains and living constructs, of floating cities and forgotten gods, where arcane technology meets the ruins of a mythic past. Here, the world’s fate is influenced not just by sword and spell, but by prophecy—a prophecy written in draconic, unfolding in real time… and your party just stepped into its path. This campaign is ideal for players who love high-stakes storytelling, layered mysteries, and morally complex decisions. Think epic fantasy with intrigue, cinematic action, and characters who matter. You'll journey across the continent of Khorvaire and beyond: from the crumbling edges of the Mournland to the skies above Sharn, from the depths of the Demon Wastes to the ancient draconic homeland of Argonnessen itself. Along the way, you’ll uncover ancient truths, navigate war-torn politics, and face dragons—not just as monsters to slay, but as enigmatic forces that remember when the world was young. You’ll begin at level 12, veterans of past victories, stepping into a world that no longer fits neatly into “good vs evil.” You may be powerful—but so are the forces moving against you. The dragons know your names. The Prophecy speaks of your choices. What will you make of that power? This is an established group of players who just finished "The Curse of Strahd" and are looking for something more challenging as their characters continue to level up! We are looking for a couple more players to start at level 12 to join us in Eberron to fight dragons and other world-shaping threats! We meet on Discord every two weeks to play.

About me
I'm a full time educator, husband, and father, and a part-time tabletop gamer, comic book nerd and storyteller. I love that games bring people together, and that role playing games transport them together to another world; a world that they shape and define through collaboration, imagination, and a little bit of luck! I've been playing D&D and other table top RPG and wargames for over a decade. I've been a DM for about three years now, mostly in my capacity as an educator, where I run the D&D club for middle and high school students at the school where I work. I love working with players of all ages, and I have seen the incredible power games have in developing social, emotional, and other important life skills in both the young and old! I was looking for ways to do more of that, and one day found an article online about StartPlaying, and decided to give it a try! For me, the four cornerstones of gaming are Fun, Safety, Inclusion and Communication! Fun is the most important because this is, after all, a game! My goal is to always bring the fun to every campaign and session. The rules to any game are vital in providing consistency, fairness, and shared expectations, but they should never get in the way of crafting a fun and memorable story! For example: I may not always be familiar with that homebrew subclass or spell you're interested in trying out, but I sure will try to make it work in the campaign if it's going to make the game more enjoyable for everyone at the table! Safety is key to a good game, especially one that involves role play. Role play is risky, pushing people to step out of their comfort zone and to be vulnerable. My job is to create a safe environment for that to happen. Furthermore, good stories involve conflict. Sometimes that conflict is violence, sometimes it is bigotry, injustice, or inequality. Having said that, my philosophy is that people come to the gaming table for positivity and connection, not for conflict and heartache. I do everything I can to ensure players are comfortable with the content of our adventures, forewarned of potentially triggering scenarios, and treated with kindness by myself and everyone else at the table. Inclusion is what gaming is all about! There is no one who doesn't belong at my table, as long as they aren't out to hurt anyone else. We all have our blind spots, and that includes me, but my experience as an educator, school counselor, and history teacher have taught me to think critically about some of the things we take for granted as "the norm" and work to dismantle false notions in my own thinking and in the way stories are told. My goal is always to think about how a storyline, character or adventure can be viewed from multiple perspectives and presented in a way that treats all people and groups (even fictional ones!) with dignity and respect! Communication is key to making all of the other cornerstones happen! Without open transparency and honest reflection, we can't have fun, be safe, or ensure everyone is included. I like to check in with my players frequently, and am responsive to their needs. I will sometimes make mistakes, say something thoughtless, and even put my foot in my mouth. We all do it! What is important is that we are clear with each other about our boundaries and expectations, and humble enough to hear what others are saying. If at any time I or someone else at the table says or does something that makes someone uncomfortable, I encourage you to send me a private message sharing your concerns. I always strive to be discreet and diplomatic, but can be direct when I need to be. There is seldom a situation that can't be resolved with a little humble, honest, communication! And that's me in a nutshell! I hope you give me a chance and join me on a shared adventure someday soon!

Creating your character
Characters will start at Level 12. The other players are freshly returned from a deadly quest in Barovia (from Curse of Strahd), ready to face a new and rising threat. You’re joining a high-level campaign where the stakes are world-shaking, but you’ll still have room to explore who your character is, what they’ve survived, and what drives them next. You can choose to have your character also come from Barovia, be someone native to Eberron, or to have recently arrived from anywhere else in the multiverse! New players are welcome, even if you’ve never played at this level before—I’ll guide you through everything you need to know! Stats: You can use Point Buy, Standard Array or Rolled Stat for ability scores. I'm not fussy about that. Happy to help you with it or let you do it on your own. For the most part, we will use 2024 updated 5e rules. Happy to discuss any 2014 legacy rules/spells/items etc. Any species/class is welcome. Our current party consists of: -A half-elf/wereraven cleric/paladin (light domain) - A quickstep (think halfing) rogue (umbral rider)/warlock (hexblade) - An orc cleric (tempest domain)/fighter Obviously, multiclass is allowed. If you want to use something homebrew or from a third-party source, just check with me first! I’m open to creative ideas as long as they support the tone and setting of the world. Backstories: Bring a character with some mystery, drive, or unfinished business. You’ll be dropped into a world shaped by ancient draconic forces, recovering from war and divine collapse. The party is a mix of hardened veterans and new allies, and your character should have a reason to join the group’s journey, even if it’s self-serving at first. I’ll provide prompts to help you tie into the setting (Eberron), and you’ll also get a private onboarding chat with me before the game to help you ground your character in the world. When to Create: You’ll create your character before our first session. I’ll be available on Discord or in a free Session 0 call to walk you through anything you need help with. If we have any new players, we’ll schedule time to walk through character creation step-by-step. Experienced players can go ahead and send builds for review. Additional Notes: You’ll receive custom setting materials and world lore, including draconic factions, political upheaval, and Eberron-specific hooks to connect your backstory. You’ll also get a Session 0 onboarding "packet" through the Discord server, including tone, safety tools, and expectations. Whether you want to play a sky-sailor with a grudge, a war-forged priest who’s lost their faith, or a dragonblooded exile carrying a deadly secret—this is a world where your story can soar.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
No special preparation is needed, thought it is helpful if you use a DnDBeyond (highly encouraged but not required). We will use Owlbear Rodeo for the VTT, but no special account is needed for it. A working mic on Discord is a must, cameras are not required.
What Bar-D-McFly brings to the table
Colorful online maps with movable tokens and characters! Descriptions, character voices and storytelling that will draw you into the story! Curated soundscapes to set the mood! A world of adventure and magic, where dangers lurk around every corner! A campaign journal/wiki powered by Lore Frog
Homebrew rules
-We use the Perkins crit rule: You roll a critical success, it automatically does max damage, then you roll the dice again and add it to that (note: the modifer applies only once) -We use "epic dice" which are a collection of d6 dice you can acquire through doing epic stuff (both epic failures and successes), and which you can use to enhance your rolls! -Other homebrew rulings as the party agrees.

How Bar-D-McFly creates a safe table
My games are built on four pillars: fun, safety, inclusion, and communication! Fun: The reason we all come together to play is to have fun, so that's what we're going to do! I find the rules are an important part of that, because they keep things fair and consistent. However, the "Rule of Cool" is just as important as any rule in any handbook, because we all want our characters to shine! I am open to altering the rules to fit anything that makes the game more fun, as long as it keeps things fair and balanced for everyone. You can expect a healthy balance between combat, exploration, and social interaction for most sessions, but I am open to adapting to what my players prefer. Safety: While conflict is key to good storytelling, and we will certainly be facing a fare share of danger, evil and injustice, no one should come away from a session feeling anxious, unsafe, or unhappy. We gather at the table to uplift and be uplifted! Some players are shy about role play, because it can feel risky and even awkward. I am happy you're here, whether you want to immerse yourself completely into your character, or simply describe to me the things your character says and does, and do little role-playing at all! Inclusion: Everyone is welcome at my table! As long as you are willing to treat others with kindness and respect, this is where you belong. My decade of experience as a Social Studies and Spanish teacher, and as a school counselor, have taught me to value the experiences of others and to examine my own biases. My goal is always to make sure all people and groups (real or in our fictional setting) are represented and treated with dignity and respect. Communication: I am a very open person, and I love to communicate. If a problem, misunderstanding, or concern arises, I want to talk it through until everyone feels comfortable. I can be discreet and diplomatic where needed, or direct if that's what is called for. I have an open door policy, and I welcome communication via Discord, the StartPlaying messaging platform, or any other mode of communication that works for you.
