About the adventure

An ancient facility unearthed, a missing expedition and an entire village gone in a night. The few survivors speak of horrid, hulking shapes in the dark, dragging off the population for purposes unknown. Feeling out of options the local baron has reached out to any able adventurers willing to lend their services, but what will they find in the steel depths below? Steel Depths is a metroidvania style megadungeon running from levels 3 to 9. Your characters will have to navigate dark corridors and contend with the many creatures that call this place home. All experience levels welcome!

About me

I've been hooked on RPGs since a friend first invited me to their game years ago. As much as I love being a player though, I love sitting behind the DM screen even more. I like to run games where there players can feel empowered to tell their own stories instead of someone else's narrative. I prefer to run my own adventures and campaigns rather than pre-written content because creating adventures is as much fun as running them for me. I try to branch out to other systems and have gotten a taste in many as a player, but for all its flaws D&D 5e still always calls me back.

They were a great GM, they spent 5 years running a long campaign and a few one shots too so I've had experience playing in both long and short campaigns with them. Was always on top of everything so that if a session needed moved due to a player missing there was no messing about in when to move it to. They done an incredible job at keeping us on track with the long campaign while also allowing for tons of player creative, but always kept us away from any derailment. In the one shots they were great at matching the vibe, some were horror, some were no stakes and some were just like a mini campaign. The group I played in was a mix of veteran and new players, in which they were able to handle the rules lawyering from veteran's but also able to have the patience needed for the new players, to help them learn how to play. I'd highly recommend having them run your game, you won't regret it.

I was part of a VERY long running campaign Janus ran and the best feedback I can give is I could never distinguish what was preplanned and improv’d. Which is a very high compliment, no matter what you were doing there was always a feeling of purpose and forethought that went into it. He excels at making encounters feel gripping and challenging, with often very dynamic settings and creative monster choices to make certain moments and battles extra memorable. Top notch and iconic NPCs throughout the campaign all voiced very nicely which gave the comfort to the players that they too could RP and not feel silly. Overall a top tier DM and would heavily recommend them.

Janus was our long suffering DM for 5 wonderful years. He crafted a world which grew with us as our characters went from peasants to heroes, starting in an isolated corner of the world in a backwater town, to being caught in the middle of warring empires and waking long slumbering dragons. Janus has a knack for crafting real, lively worlds. Where you can really make an impact and feel like you are an important part of it.

Character creation
Creating your character

Characters will be created ahead of the first session and start at level 3. For the most part character creation will follow standard rules, using standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) ability scores. You may use any content from the following official sources. If you're interested in using content from other sourcebooks or homebrew feel free to ask me and I'll consider on a case by case basis: Player's Handbook Xanathar's Guide to Everything Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (Except Custom Lineage and artificer) There are also a couple of extra rules we'll be using for character creation: You can apply ability score bonuses from your ancestry to any ability. For example if your ancestry gives you +2 to Wisdom and +1 to Dexterity, you may instead apply that +2 to any ability of your choice, and the +1 to any other. To help build the atmosphere of a dark dungeon, player characters cannot gain darkvision from their ancestry. Feel free to discuss your characters with other players or myself. You can have your characters starting off knowing each other, or they can meet on the job. We will be playing in Foundry VTT and so I will try to keep the server open as much as possible while you're making your character, but you may wish to make a copy of your sheet (for example on D&D Beyond or DiceCloud) to refer to while the server is offline.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

You'll need to have access to a mic and a Discord account. I understand that not everyone is able to play in an ideal audio environment, but you'll need to make sure you are at least reasonably audible with minimal background noise. You will need to join the Discord server we'll be playing in (I'll provide a link once you sign up) but don't need to participate in the server further than using it for the voice call. We will be playing using Foundry VTT which won't require you to make an account or download anything. You may like to have your own copies of the rulebooks to reference outside of sessions, and I can point you towards helpful online resources if you need, but all important rules should be available in game. I don't need you to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game's rules, but I would appreciate if you can learn your own character sheet and abilities to help the game run smoothly. You will need to find your own art for your character. I don't have any strict requirements (though please keep them appropriate) but I do have a no AI art policy.

Safety
How Janus Nemo creates a safe table

There will be a Lines and Veils document in the Discord server for the game that players can add to. Players are expected to observe the Lines and Veils of other players, and players who repeatedly or deliberately ignore the boundaries of other players will be kicked from the game. Players are free to leave sessions if they are feeling uncomfortable, and can message me out of session to discuss any issues they are having with the game. I'll aim to have a 10-15 minute break around the middle of each session so we can all refresh.
