About the adventure

It was a gift, delivered to Azoun IV, King of the Forest Kingdom of Cormyr. A simple box, adorned with an "E" and the sigil of the Sage of Shadowdale. It radiated magic, as was swiftly confirmed by the Royal Wizard Vangerdahast, but beneath the benign enchantments that surrounded the box was a trap, hidden in the weave of the spells. Black smoke billowed out, seeking all living beings in the audience chamber. As it poured into their lungs they choked and collapsed -- the only survivors being two guards who slammed the doors shut and ran. Yet the victims of this assassination did not rest easy and their corpses pulled themselves to their feet, the smoke leaking out of every orifice. Azoun retook his throne and his now-deceased followers roamed the castle. Those they slew rose again as mindless undead, waiting for the commands of their progenitors. Tanalusta Obarskyr, heir to the throne, has vanished, and her sister Alusair, under heavy pressure from the army of the dead, has retreated from Suzail to the nearby city of Marsember. Nowhere seems safe -- the Blue Dragons evacuated many on the Royal Fleet, but now ships come limping back to Marsember harbor, bearing the injured and forsaken, claiming the curse has spread across the Dragonmere to Teziir and Westgate. Messengers from Myrmeen Lhal, of the northern city of Arabel, report the city to be under siege from the north and the east -- seemingly independent of the crisis in Suzail. The priests of Myrkul, Lord of the Dead, have been silent -- providing no answers, even under extreme duress. What is this tragedy that befalls the Heartlands? How far has it spread throughout the Forgotten Realms? What will you do as the world ends? "Ashen Kingdom" is an open-ended campaign, with the grand conceit of "what if the Forgotten Realms had a zombie apocalypse?" It is set in the time of the Second Edition campaign setting, but pre-Time of Troubles, even if the rules are from an era soon (or long after.) The epic high fantasy of the Realms is muted to that era. Yes there are archmages about, however they are proving difficult to reach, and many of the powerful agencies of the Realms have been shattered by this event. No experience is required to play, as we're mostly destroying the canon as the game progresses. There is a degree of open play to the game, set up as a sandbox, and enough materials will be provided to help you make informed decisions! If you're a fan of the Korean show "Kingdom", the show Black Summer, or any dark fantasy, you should find something for you here. The tone is dark, but with some humour present to contrast the horror.

About me

Hello! I’ve been playing and running RPGs for the better part of 3 decades, professionally for 10. In that time I’ve introduced tabletop rpgs in kids’ programs (ages 8-13) and to adults of all ages. I love nothing more than bringing people into the hobby! I run an inclusive and respectful table that spans playstyles from a light, casual atmosphere to an immersive and deep experience. Over at www.thetabletopalmanac.wordpress.com you can read reviews I’ve done of a variety of games. Even if not listed on my profile, I’m available to run them all! While this would be a great full-time gig, I'm primarily doing this to put money in my daughter's college fund, so it's going to a good cause! (Should higher education exist in the future).

Simon is great! He’s got a great playstyle and makes the entire experience very enjoyable. I was a bit of a luddite regarding playing online/virtually but Simon really did a great job makingbthe experience come to life.

Simon has been so great to work with! Friendly and more than reasonably accommodating. He knows old systems, new systems, middle years systems, you get the idea! He was incredibly patient over a couple weeks while I assembled some friends from around the country to play in a very long campaign that I’ve wanted to play in for 20 years. I recommend Simon to anyone looking to have a good time, in game

Do I want to recomend Simon as GM. Well I couldn't say no and give him five stars at the same time could I. Really I want to monopolize all his time on our game. But if you insist on stealling his attention you'll find him to be a great guy and a great story teller. I met a cool group to play with and we have a lot of fun in game and the inbetween on discord. Can highly reccomend. Click the join button and see for yourself.

Had a lot of fun in the WFRP game we played.

Character creation
Creating your character

Character creation will happen during the first session with beginner characters. Only expect the core book(s) to be used, but I'll talk through supplements before we meet.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

You'll need a mic and I'll be on camera, but it's not mandatory for anyone else. Please make sure you're in a place without lots of background noise. I'll provide any needed resources and you don't need to know the rules to play!

What Simon Kaye brings to the table

I start with Rules as Written, but adjust to the taste of the table. I'll attempt character voices and use music, so long as neither is distracting. We'll use a VTT: either Foundry or Owlbear Rodeo. This will potentially be combat-heavy and expect shifting allegiances, backstabbing, everything you might think could happen in a zombie apocalypse.

Safety
How Simon Kaye creates a safe table

I've covered everything I can think of in the content warnings. Otherwise we'll use some basic safety tools, checklist provided in advance, and talk through others that the group may find helpful.
