About Simon Kaye
Hello! I’ve been playing and running RPGs for the better part of 3 decades, professionally for 10. In that time I’ve introduced tabletop rpgs in kids’ programs (ages 8-13) and to adults of all ages. I love nothing more than bringing people into the hobby! I run an inclusive and respectful table that spans playstyles from a light, casual atmosphere to an immersive and deep experience. Over at www.thetabletopalmanac.wordpress.com you can read reviews I’ve done of a variety of games. Even if not listed on my profile, I’m available to run them all!

My favorite books are
Fantasy: Steven Erikson's Malazan series. Horror: Anything Stephen King or Clive Barker. Science Fiction: Dune series.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Flexible, Entertaining, Accommodating. They also added "Killed Us All" (that's three words?) CANADIAN (also true)
When I'm not running games I'm...
...planning games? Thinking about games? Reading games? Just kidding. Well, yes, but I also spend time with my family, bike, watch and/or perform live music, write.
How Simon Kaye runs games
The style of my games vary depending on the rules and dynamic at the table. Whether it’s a light, casual dungeon crawl, or a deeply immersive character-focused game, I enjoy them all and bring everything I have to foster a specific environment. I aim to foster an inclusive and safe atmosphere. All should feel welcome so long as the social contract of an accepting society is adhered to:)

My games focus on...
...if I were to get all high-concept, my games focus on power structures, examining their strengths and weaknesses and usually falling on the side of "they're easily corrupted, so be careful." This doesn't often apply during a plain dungeon crawl, but it can. Oh it can.
Rules are...
there to facilitate the experience. Well-designed rules help achieve the intended style of gameplay. They should never "get out of the way", but instead make you excited to use them.

I love it when a player
leans into their character and the setting. When they contribute elements that had never occurred to me that either bring the narrative in a whole new and awesome direction, or reinforce and emphasize its themes.
I think metagaming...
cheats you out of the discovery part of roleplaying games and steals the fun from others. It can also be frustrating if I've changed something in the canon, so why put yourself through it?
My table is not the place for...
Those who break the social contract of respect. Discrimination against someone based on who they are inherently. A lack of understanding that everyone functions differently and we can all use a little help sometimes.
