Of the half dozen GMs I have played with in the past year, Casey was the ONLY one who was both brave and conscientious enough to proactively include an RPG Player Consent form as part of the session zero/onboarding process. And trust me, some of the others really SHOULD have done so!
Devin ran a Mothership one-shot for our group of players (mostly) new to this system (myself included). Some highlights included 1) a unique story/plot that made it far more interesting than a regular bug hunt dungeon crawl in space, and 2) memorably different vocalizations for the various NPCs, which I really appreciated. Good mood setting, with detailed world building descriptions. Would gladly play in one of his adventures again.
A rule of cool leaning GM who likes player creativity and doesn’t mind revising things on the fly to benefit the story that is unfolding. That said, Derek knows the rules really well, so if you are new to the system, don't worry. And either way he sticks to the rules unless there is a useful story reason to fudge things (rare). He knows the scenarios inside out, so he is not pausing to read things in the background in real time, but is present and active. He also likes to build out additional backstory to really tie characters into the story, even if it is a standard scenario, and uses a proper session zero to help loop all the aspects (story, characters, etc) together. I actually PREFER published scenarios as a basis for play, and its great when a Keeper can adapt it and make it their own so that we players cannot tell where the pre written and improvised stuff starts and stops. Derek does that all the time. Fills in all the places where He also takes good notes so he can summarize things well at the start of each session, and does little extra things to help players keep things straight like writing out the names of NPCs and other details in the chat window which helps a lot. He does NOT do a lot of complex and different voices, like a voice actor sometimes does. That's okay, he still keeps things terribly immersive in all the important ways including historical accuracy, and talking in first person for NPCs in a way that makes it clear who is talking and what their personality and or emotional state is like. I will happily play in another of Derek's games in the future.
Played a one shot introductory Call of Cthulhu adventure with Bacon. I hadn't played CoC before other than solo adventures, and hadn't used Roll20 before. This was a great introduction to the rules and methods of play. Focus was on tools and mechanics, understanding the rules, and playing through exploration and combat situations. This was less about story and role playing which may be expected from a “learn to play” one shot.
