What I appreciate about Carson as a DM: Carson has an excellent grasp of the rules—better than most people who claim they do—and applies them confidently and consistently. He listens to player ideas. If you can clearly explain who your character is and why, he’ll work with you to help bring that vision to life rather than shutting it down. He respects everyone’s time. He keeps turns moving, including his own, and isn’t afraid to step in when things start to drag. He’s willing to say no when needed, and he doesn’t shy away from real consequences—even character death—when the situation calls for it. Even during character spotlight moments, he actively pulls other players into the scene, encouraging their imagination and engagement, even when the moment isn’t directly about them. Finally, there was a moment in our game that really stands out to me. Two prideful, morally questionable characters had an intense in-character argument. Voices were raised, we talked over each other, and it was intentionally rude—but entirely in-character. After the session, I checked in with Carson to make sure he understood that it was strictly in-character, not personal. He did—and said he genuinely enjoyed the exchange. To this day, that argument remains one of my favorite moments I’ve ever had at any table.

One thing that I appreciate so very much about Gabe is his preparation. Anyone that has DM’d can tell you that preparation for games makes a world of difference. Gabe’s preparation is next level. There is no struggling to put together maps last minute. He is ready. Maps, Narrative, story hooks, loot. Images. It’s all there. And holy heck does that make a difference.

I realized something when i play with Cosmo that’s hard to admit…but true. Cosmo is so good as a DM he made me realize how bad i am when I DM. It’s not like the guy is just inherently talented as a DM. He puts time into every session. It’s evident. He doesn’t just “log in at game time” and run x-y-z characters through a story. He sits down with you and wants to know your characters story. He wants to make it part of his story. I was literally captivated by another players backstory tie-in my first day in. It’s awesome.

I wont review a GM off one game session. I think it’s best to get a good feel on how they navigate sessions over time. Christian is a great DM. He allows for creative characters. I’m one of “those” players that writes a short novel for a back story. He actually read it. He had an idea of who my character was and allowed me to play it as i wanted (within the confines of the rules of course). I’ve played with other DM’s that charge more for less. That care less. that put less time, thought and energy into every session.
