There are 3 qualities that Yello brings to his game that really stand out to me. Comfort – He goes out of his way to make sure that each player not only feels welcome but safe. There’s a lot of moving parts to a virtual online game such as technology and mechanics that could potentially act as a source of frustration. He does a good job of guiding players through all of it and helping them focus on the tale being told rather than the minutiae. His engaging manner really pulls the whole group together and into the story line. Which brings me to… Story telling – Yello is a storyteller. If you stopped reading there, it’d be enough. His descriptions give life to the world that you have entered. The NPCs and baddies all have their own voice and personalities. He gives you the freedom to contribute to the fantasy to whatever degree you want. Then adds flare to your descriptions as needed, so that your actions sound as exciting and interesting as any other part of the narrative. Enthusiasm – His passion and energy radiates through every part of the game. It’s contagious. Not only are you drawn in by his masterful storytelling, but the vibe he exudes establishes an environment where you feel a part of what is going on. Everyone draws everyone into the mix. Creating an adventure that you don’t want to end and will continue thinking about well after it is over.
Travis is a storyteller. He takes a stock module and breathes life into it. Then he builds the world up in your mind (and on Roll20) and allows you move through it organically. I appreciate the way he is able to maintain the flow of the game for the party without making any of the individual players feel pressured in the moment beyond what the story dictates.
