Monster of the Week is the perfect system for lovers of urban fantasy and horror. Inspired by shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files, this adaptation of the Apocalypse World systems offers straightforward mechanics that encourage imagination and roleplay from everyone at the table. This combination makes it my favorite system that I have played to date and I recommend that almost anyone give it a try! Pros: + Straightforward rules make the system accessible to a variety of players + Story-forward design allows for expansive roleplaying and shared ownership of the story + Published expansions are consistently great but never necessary to purchase Cons: - Long-term campaigns require some tweaks to the system as advancements occur quickly - Flexible ruleset requires that Keepers adjudicate when rolls should be made and how to interpret those results, which may be challenging for new GMs
Liam is an amazing GM! They work very hard to incorporate player characters into the world, have a deep understanding of the genre they are working in, and are supportive of players of all experience levels. I’ve had a blast during every session I’ve played with them and always look forward to the next one.
Sarah is a fantastic GM! I absolutely love exploring her stories and seeing them take shape based on character actions. She has a penchant for storytelling and incorporating player ideas into her incredibly well built world. As an experienced player, I am always impressed by her patience and ability to explain the myriad rules of 5th edition (including the 2024 updates) to new players at the table without slowing the game down. I can wholeheartly recommend Sarah to players of any level of experience looking for a deep story that responds to its characters.
Zach is both an incredible GM and person. The second our group finishes a session, I start counting the days until the next one. Each game with him is fun, creative, and the highlight of my week. I highly recommend Zach both for new players who need empathetic guidance and those with a lot of experience who want to collaborate with an amazing storyteller.
Elley is an amazing GM and very thoughtful of her players. I had never used Roll 20 before and was new to playing D&D, but she was very patient with me and super helpful with explaining everything. She even took extra time out of her day to help me come up with a backstory before the first session. Elley is very nice and communicative, which is helpful for me as someone with an anxiety disorder. Plus, she is inclusive of LGBTQ+ players and never misgenders me. I would highly recommend her to everyone, whether you are new to D&D or have a lot of experience. My sessions with her are the highlight of me week!
