About Paul

Hello adventurers! My name is Paul Wunnenberg, a gamemaster with 10 years of experience! I have run various systems over in person sessions and online sessions over Discord. I use Avrae to handle online dice rolling, as well as Apollo and when2meet.com to help organize my sessions. I've recently branched out to Foundry VTT in order to experiment with livestreaming campaigns! Some of my other interests include board/video games, travel, pin collecting, and being a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado.

I became a GM because

I saw Matthew Mercer rocking the internet during campaign one. If a few nerdy ass voice actors can have fun playing together, why not gather my friends and tell a story together?

My favorite shows/movies are

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Ted Lasso, and Elf.

How Paul runs games

I GM by two major rules. If you play in my games, you agree to these two rules implicitly. The Golden Rule; Have Fun! The Silver Rule; Don't be a Jerk!/Don't interfere with other peoples' fun! If you can follow those two rules, you will have a great time at my table. In regards to the three pillars, I am strongest in both running combat and roleplaying. Puzzle solving and exploration has never really been my strong suit. While I am practicing my work at Foundry VTT, I have most of my experience with playing within the Theatre of the Mind. My campaigns also tend to be 100% homebrew, or within established settings with a lot of personal elements and homebrew to the stories in order to accommodate character backstories and to make sure I, as a GM, have enough power to know where the story could go towards. In terms of vibes, I lean more serious as an individual and as a Gamemaster. I enjoy creating stories where player interests are taken into account (including my own). While I do always have a plan for my sessions, I always allow my players to change the trajectory of our stories. I also pride myself on my ability to put my foot down in select situations. If it is impossible (in general, or for your character) then I won't let you have a chance to roll dice.

I deal with rules issues by...

either addressing them immediately or addressing them after the session.

I once ran a session...

in late-night New York City, without a clear place to get connected. I tried a comedy club, a coworking space, and eventually found a cafe open until 10pm, with bean bags comfy enough to fall asleep in.

When it comes to voices

we try our best. But I can somehow speak British, Irish, and Khajitt well enough.

Paul's ideal table

As for the players that will fit well at my table, I've discovered that players that have high engagement, deep engagement, and high levels of respect seem to do well at my table. Still trying to figure out my 'one-shot' vibes. However, for longer form campaigns a typical session will start with a few minutes of vibing and chatting, making sure that we are all developing our friendships at the table. During the session, I try to keep things on track, but there are times when someone goes on verbal thought process, I often let them finish their thoughts (as long as it doesn't drag on for too long). After all, friendship is the glue that holds together the best gaming groups.

I think it's a red flag when players...

make characters that are liabilities when they meet up with other players for the first time.

I think metagaming...

can be used for good or ill. A good metagamer can enhance the story by being respectful of other characters' narratives or even hindering themselves when their character wouldn't reasonably do the optimal action for themselves.

I think min/maxing...

is only acceptable when EVERYONE at the table is doing it.
