About Lucas

Hi! I'm an old hand at RPGs, started back in 2000 with AD&D and quickly started playing Storyteller, D&D, Pathfinder and Lancer. I like to create character-driven stories, and tend to "homebrew" even published adventurers to better match the characters stories and the player's expectations.

I became a GM because

At first, because someone had to, if we wanted to play. However, I quickly fell in love with creating worlds and stories, and seeing other people interact with that.

My favorite books are

The entire LotR series, Hobbit/Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales included. Pretty much anything by Alan Moore... And Neuromancer.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Exercising - really. When you get a bit older, exercise is needed to avoid serious injuries. Start now! You'll not like it (at least I don't), but you'll like the results. Gaming - I love singleplayer games, specially story-dense like CP2077. Eating - the reason I exercise.

How Lucas runs games

I love improvisation. Even when following a preset module or my own notes, I always leave room for wild stuff to happen: both dramatic and serious, or lighthearted and ridiculous. My games tend to be combat-heavy, or better, roll-heavy. I think the dice are awesome to decide how the actions go. I use the "fail forward" paradigm, so if a specific action is important or even needed for the plot or character development, it WILL succeed. However, at what cost?

I prep by

Making a general plotline and adapting it on the fly. Instead of specific scenes, I think about what that scene would MEAN to the characters. For example, if they need to learn that the King is a doppelganger, that information could come from a beggar spouting nonsense or a hushed rumour by the inn.

Rules are...

Guidelines. Strong guidelines, for sure, but they can be ignored when there's a pressing issue.

Lucas's ideal table

I love players that are invested in their characters. That is to say, you don't have to be a pro actor or anything like that, but I'd like you to give a damn about the story being told. I love teaching new players the rules and systems, so previous knowledge isn't as important as enthusiasm.

I love it when a player

makes a bad decision, not because it's "something my character would do", but because it advances the story we're telling.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Disrespect and talk over each other. That kind of behavior gets tiring real quick.

I think min/maxing...

is GREAT, if it makes sense if your character. There's no problem at all to want to make a "strong" character - however, that needs to be the vibe of the entire table. And it also needs to fit in the story that's being told.
