About Sunshine

How do you make someone forget every single detail of their life? Ask them to talk about themself. I am Sunshine, a non-binary GM from the US. I have been playing TTRGPs for over ten years and GMed on and off most of that time.In addition to TTRPGs, I have been writing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. I have one degree in creative writing and one degree in playwrighting and dramaturgy (basically, I'm the loremaster, question asker, and conflict resolver of a show). I love reading TTRPG books and have a decent knack for memorizing rules (thank you AuDHD!). The systems that I have played are: - Alice is Missing - Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 & 5E - Fabula Ultima - Lasers & Feelings - Monster of the Week - Palladium - Pathfinder 1E & 2E - Phoenix: Dawn Command - Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game

When I'm not running games I'm...

Trying to not crack under the pressure of existential dread and mental health. Otherwise I spend my time writing, reading, and playing games of any sort. And of course snuggling my cats.

How Sunshine runs games

As a storyteller, my main focus is on roleplay, characters, and worldbuilding. I love stories that delve into the mysteries of the world and reveal shocking truths. I work with my players to create characters and stories that fit into the world but have strong emotional ties to the adventure. Combat is my second focus. For most games, combat is the best way to show off what makes a system unique and enjoyable. My aim is to have some combat encounters that will make the PCs shine and some that will greatly test them. As I usually have a solid understanding of a system's rules I can easily help new players learn the game. Most importantly, these are games. We are meant to have fun. While I do enjoy emotional moments in games, if we also can't laugh and goof off from time to time, what's the point? Finally, if you play a fantasy game with me, you absolutely will be meeting faeries, and have the possibility of coming across dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Hayao Miyazaki. Animation is an absolutely beautiful medium and since my games have powerful magic, I'd prefer for them not to be live action.

My favorite trope is...

Hope. Anything that deals with people always fighting no matter the odds I come back to time and time again.

Rules are...

A tool, but not law. Games are meant to be fun, and if people are having fun, go with it. But I also acknowledge that rules and mechanics can shape the decisions we make in game and create interesting and fun situations.

Sunshine's ideal table

As a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, it definitely is a space for other members of the alphabet mafia. I aim for stories that definitely have deep and heavy emotional moments, but still can have a laugh both in and out of character. I try to make sure every single player can have a moment in the spotlight and enjoy it when the players too shine a light on and celebrate each other. Open communication is incredibly important to me as I would prefer that people talk to me about anything before it festers into a larger problem.

I love it when a player

Helps me build the world as it is just as much yours as it is mine.

I think metagaming...

Is useful at times. It has become a sort of boogeyman in the TTRPG community, and there are times when it isn't appropriate, but there are times when metagaming is beneficial.

My table is not the place for...

Selfishness. This is a cooperative game and everyone needs to have fun and have moments to shine.
