About StrangestCat
Hey all, I’m StrangestCat, and I want YOU to join me for a game! I’ve been playing D&D for a few years now, and have only recently made the dive into DMing, but I’m definitely diving in whole-heart! I love the ability of TTRPGs to bring together a group to tell a story, and character- and world-building with rich lore and backstory is what I love and bring to the table. I typically run games with D&D 5/5.5E, but I’ve been branching out into different systems lately and cooking up some fun stuff! Whether it’s a quick one-shot adventure or battle or a campaign you want, I can cover it! I’m in the midst of putting together a few homebrew campaigns I’d love to run through SPG, and also love to run the classics, so give me a shot and I’ll give your table a great time! I use Foundry VTT for more in-depth automations and experience, but also love running quicker and lighter stuff on AboveVTT, Roll20, and even Beyond’s Maps VTT! Whatever you or your group has in mind, I can accommodate! I’ll even write custom campaigns or one-shots for the right crew - Hope to see you at the table!

I became a GM because
I started as a player, and still am, but wanted to just run some fun combats with friends and siblings, which turned into one-shots, which turned into wanting to head up an epic campaign! The fun and satisfaction of it clawed it's way into my head, and I don't think it's leaving anytime soon!
My favorite books are
The Death & Life of Miguel de Cervantes, Stephen Marlowe Don Quixote (El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha), Miguel de Cervantes Neuromancer, William Gibson So the first modern western novel, a fantastical retelling of it's author's personal story, and the birth of the cyberpunk movement
When I'm not running games I'm...
Playing with my son, fishing, reading or working on whatever new project has come into my head! I'm also still a player first, so chances are I'm coming up with a character's backstory or planning some hijinks to pull on my GM's!
How StrangestCat runs games
I always try to run games that balance all three pillars of D&D: roleplay, exploration, and combat, but if there’s one thing I think is my signature, it’s that I love stories driven by character choices. Backstory and character development are my absolute favorite part of D&D, so expect NPCs with motivations, complicated villains, and usually some sort of perversion of the D&D norms in some fun way! I enjoy giving players opportunities to develop their characters, whether that’s heartfelt conversations around a campfire, tense negotiations with powerful figures, or confronting the consequences of past decisions. I like backstories to matter in my games. If you give me hooks, goals, fears, rivals, or unfinished business, I’ll do my best to weave them into the campaign! That said, I also love challenging players in combat. I like encounters that reward teamwork, creative thinking, and smart strategy - not just trading attacks (though if combat is how you interact with D&D, there’s really no wrong way to do it!). My players can expect combats that feel cinematic and consequential, but also fun! I try to keep most sessions light-hearted, even if we’re doing the serious stuff! The rule of cool will always trump RAW at my table, so make it epic!

My favorite trope is...
My favorite would have to be the lone wanderer against the world, but I think if we're talking group settings, it's the found family or true companions trope, where a disparate group with varied motivations and desires becomes fiercely loyal to one another through shared struggle.
Rules are...
made to be broken! But only if it's EPIC!
When it comes to voices
I've been working super hard to expand my repertoire! Don't fault me if I don't always hit the mark ;-)
StrangestCat's ideal table
I try to keep the vibe light, even when the content isn't. I do try to impart the seriousness of situations, but love when players can joke and be themselves even as they take on the mantles of great and powerful characters. I'm fully in the Rule of Cool camp, and if you want to try to achieve something in a wild or unexpected way, I'm always all for it!

I think metagaming...
It depends on how seriously you (the players) want to take the experience. If it's a full-on high fantasy always-on RP heavy game, then yeah, I'll lock that behavior down. But if it works for the group to discuss above table, sometimes that's okay if the players feel it moves the story for them.
I think min/maxing...
is a perfectly valid character-building choice! I'm not anti-optimization, I'm anti-optimization that exists in a vacuum. If the mechanics and the story support each other, I'm all for it! I never want to shame a player for building the character that THEY want, I only want their story to reflect it
My perfect party mix is
"Oops, All Bards!" But honestly, I kind of love an unbalanced party. When a disparate group of characters who might not have the skills necessary to accomplish the task before them can come up with a workaround, those end up being my favorite moments!
