About Vega

I am a romance writer, freelance editor, and community organizer from SLC! I've only been playing TTRPGs for about six years (like a lot of us, got into it during the pandemic), and I love playing in the chaos and building worlds with people at the table. It's stunning to me how fast you become friends with people you didn't even know an hour ago. I love, love the Daggerheart system. D&D is a love, as is Thirsty Sword Lesbians. I currently play in 4 regular games (2 Daggerheart, 1 D&D, 1 Vampire of the Masquerade). I run one-shots at our favorite gaming cafe, and also once a month for newbies to TTRPGs at our queer bookstore. I'm about to take over GMing one of the Daggerheart tables. I have run games at the Utah Museum of Natural History for different fundraising programs they have put together, and am on the call list for our gaming cafe when they need event GMs.

I got started GMing...

My partner got us into this hobby and the more that we played, the more I started rambling to her about ideas I wanted to explore. In between campaigns, one of the tables we play at posted a challenge to everyone that we would GM at least one game, and everyone did it and we all loved it.

My favorite shows/movies are

TV: Star Trek (all of it, and i mean ALL of it) The X Files Critical Role (all of it!) Bob's Burgers Movies: The Hours Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit (you heard me) The Last Unicorn Star Trek (all of it ... even Nemesis ... yeah ....)

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing queer romance set in SLC, hanging in coffee shops and bookstores, coordinating a local writers group, and absolutely indulging in my current obsessions. I love reading, long walks in the mountains, and I have finally entered my video game era.

How Vega runs games

I absolutely love roleplay and encouraging it with my players. Most of my experience is with one-shots, but I'll still find a way to bring your player's backstory into the game and let you build on those skills. I'm not huge into things like epic combat, but I do also think one of the best ways to learn the game is to get into scrapes along the way. I'm not combat shy, but I also like to include puzzles where my players have to work together to solve the situation. Despite the flower crown in my profile picture, I don't shy away from heavy stories and I hope that my players feel safe enough to take big risks and swings at the table. In line with that, I maintain conversations with my players and do my best to keep the table safe for everyone. I'm not opposed to inter-party conflict, as long as it's in service of a larger story and not just to take the spotlight. I love a vibes-based game. Rule of cool (while still following the rules) is fantastic in the service of the table becoming a party.

I deal with rules issues by...

I'll always double check the rules first. I'm the first to admit I don't know everything. But if sticking harshly to the rules overtakes the narrative flow of the game, we talk about it as a partnership.

I once ran a session...

at the Utah Museum of Natural History where the goal was to get across a dinosaur quarry. The arcane power lock on the train was harming the land. When the lock was broken , it was time to get home. The players suggested steam, and the museum staff hollered "so you're going to use fossil fuels?!"

Rules are...

We are a community first and foremost at this table. We aren't here to randomly kill the NPCs or loot the village. We are here to build a story together - whether it's a oneshot or a campaign. Vibes over rules lawyering. Rule of Cool over bullet points.

Vega's ideal table

In a game where I'm a player, our rogue has a tendency to offer the minions of the bad guys a new gig. There is no better sound than the laughter that comes along when the gargoyle looks at the hag and says "Yeah, I'm going with them." I'm not a rules lawyer (even if rules are important!) So, if you're into rule of cool, let's play the vibe, and especially if you love flower crowns, you will fit in well.

I am for a vibe that's...

here for the cozy and the fun. Even when we're taking down the evil queen or fighting back the harbinger of doom, we're doing it as friends and having fun with it. The game stakes matter. Characters matter. But we're here for each other.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Star Trek, Critical Role, stories of Camelot, theater kids being dorks, and a healthy dose of unicorns and dragons, we're gonna fit well.

I love it when a player

takes a big swing and the table trusts the story enough to see it through.
